Small LP Gas dealer or junkyard on freight yard?

In the Aug 2011 MR (pg 26), theere’s a great article about creating a small LP gas dealer on a curve. Would something like that also work in a freight yard? I thought to put one in my 1980s layout in rural VA.

Another option was creating a small junkyard w/ a garntry crane. It would include much of the discussion from the Oct 2011 MR.

TIA!

I’m not really sure of your question.

If you mean, would such a dealership or junk yard be in the middle of a yard, with classification and/or storage tracks on both sides, I seriously doubt it.

If you mean, would such a dealership, or junk yard, or both (plus other rail-served businesses) be found adjacent to a freight yard but served by their own spurs - quite frequently. Convenience to the rails would be the major factor in locating such businesses.

Propane dealerships can be found in the smallest of small towns in agricultural areas. Junk yards big enough to require an overhead crane are usually found in larger settlements. (the small town variety usually use forklifts, or a small tractor-mounted crane.)

Hey guys.

Here is my interpretation of a small farm suppler. He has equipment, fertilizer, Anhydrous ammonia. and propane, plus other things inside the building. Coal is in the shed and cement and bagged stuff is in the old box car. If you can think of it, there is probably proto type someplace.

Have fun.

Did they have anhyd back in the steam age? Thought that was a more modern item. If you are being a prototypical modeler though natural gas wasn’t in wide spread use untill after WW2. Before then it was mostly considered an annoyance that came along with oil and burned off.

Hi Berkshire

I enjoy making up a consist from the late 1800s to the more modern GP40s so the scenery has to be generic. Never could make up my mind what time period I wanted. [:-^]

Just having fun. [swg]

We used to live in a town of about 2,000 that had a rail yard (it used to be a division point back in the days of steam) and there was (and probably still is) a fuel oil/gasoline dealer at the edge of the yard in a back corner. I’ve modelled one in the back corner of my rail yard.

A railcar rebuilder/scrapper would be a suitable industry. Many years ago (in the Western Pacific days) one leased the roundhouse area of the WP’s Oroville CA yard. When I saw it think the roundhouse was gone (don’t remember) . They used the turntable and the roundhouse tracks
