Smaller Train Shows 2025

The Lansing, Michigan Train Show is this Sunday, Nov 9. Larger show with 500 tables.

On the East Coast, Greenberg Train Shows are small to mid size. Certainly not as big as NTS, TrainFest or Amherst.

I was supposed to go to Chicago last week but passed because of the controller snafus. They held the annual International Rail Fair at Cal Expo in Sacramento so I dropped in on Saturday morning. Should have stayed home. If I blinked I would have missed it. Very few of the modular layouts were actually working, and the merchandise for sale was mostly junk. I was through in less than 30 minutes. At least I parked off site. But train shows in this neck of the woods have been going downhill since before covid. Ah well… Wouldn’t be so bad if the price was smaller, but alas, it was not.

If a Greenberg show is within a two-hour drive of you they’re worth going to.
(With the exception of the York show I’ve got a two-hour drive rule, it’s as far as I care to go.)
However the ā€œGold Standardā€ of Greenberg shows is the one held in Edison NJ. By far and away the best of them all. I’d make a 2.5 hour drive for that one.
Unfortunately I live in Virginia so it’s a 6.5 hour drive but I was right-place right-time lucky to hit the Edison show twice and was VERY impressed!

It’s the only Greenberg show I do (Edison) as it’s 3x a year. Always a good selling show for us. I’ve been asked to go to the Timonium show, but it’s too close to other shows and not enough time to restock since everything we do is custom…

Wow, 3x a year?

Yes, while the business is based in RI, I’m NJ based and the table fees are reasonable. Shows are usually end of March, early to Mid-August and Thanksgiving weekend.

The following weekend we do a show in Marlborough, MA. That’s a great show sponsored by the HUB Division of the NMRA..

If there was a two week spread between the show at the Big E and the February show in MD, I would do that one as well…

Timonium’s about 3.5, almost 4 hours from me. I’ve seen videos and it looks like a pretty good show but it’s really over my limit. I could be wrong but it always seems to be the weekend after the TCA’s York show. However that doesn’t seem to hurt them. Different crowd maybe?
I’ve done the York show (5 hour drive) however that one calls for a two day overnight stay, it’s HUGE.

If I was to do that show, it would have to be the one 2 weeks after the Amherst Show which would be in February…

Considering the vagaries of New England weather in winter I’m surprised the Amherst folks hold their show that time of year. But I guess it works for them, you can’t argue with success!

The towns know how to keep the roads clear. Been up there a number of times and it’s not an issue… The problem is the weather morons put a scare into everyone. Last time it snowed they said the entire New England area was going to get hit. Only Boston got it hard and despite that, people still came to the show…

Neal, will you be in Marlboro in December? If so I’ll drop by.

I was at the Lansing Train Show earlier this month. I didn’t pick up a lot of model stuff, but I did find a book on Alaska’s third (and more obscure) railroad, the Copper River and Northwestern.

Got to agree 100%.

According to them we are either flooded out or up to the armpits with snow.

I always count on their over-predicted amounts of snow. Today, the prediction here is for 6 to 9 inches of snow. I am hoping, and half expecting, 2 to 3 inches.
