Smart Media cards

Walmart did have 1GB SD cards this past summer for about $35(IIRC). However, they are slow, and you really need fast ones if you are going to take action pictures(like trains moving). I have a Sandisk Extreme II SD card for my camera. I paid about $50 last year for a 1 GB version- even faster versions are available on the net for around $30-35!

This pic shows the difference between the SD card and the SDSM card. The SD card is on the right. The type I’m looking for is on the left.

Be careful to review other’s input about a product you are evaluating.

They don’t have it. I’ve looked at every flash memory card they sell.

You are right. I’ve searched through my normal on-line sources for obsolete computer components, and none of them list SM cards. If you can be patient, I’ll check next time I’m home in Colorado whether I still have the 1 or 2 I owned laying around. If I still have them, I’ll mail them to you. Due to reduced storage space in the past year and in the new house, I’ve been slowly giving away my most obsolete equipment to Goodwill; the cards may have gone there.

I bought the SM cards for a digital camera my wife bought at a garage sale that I never got working. One was too big (32MB IIRC) for the camera to read correctly. The other was smaller; I don’t recall the size.

I realize money is very tight, but do you really want to mess around with technology that old? Just the difference in battery life (I only buy cameras that will run on AA batteries) over the last few years is amazing. Way too many times, the cost of keeping old technology going is higher than dumping and getting new. I know, I typically stay at least one generation behind in my home digital equipment. If managed correctly - which I don’t always stay on top of - one generation behind is usually the sweet spot for price. But if I don’t upgrade at the right time, the cost curve starts going up again as supplies dry up.

just my thoughts

I have two cameras. One uses SD cards. Not a problem. Wal-Mart has them overflowing the shelves. The other uses SDSM cards and is the one that I use for my good close-ups. The newer camera can’t get that close. Also, they both use AA rechargable batteries, again, not a problem. I really don’t want to lose the use of this camera.
