I am modeling an industry which has a tall smokestack. Are all stacks over a certain height required to be painted red and white. Seems to me a lot are and I don’t think they are painted that way for decoration. Any one know what the rules are if any?
Over a certain height (which escapes me at the moment) anything is suppose to have the white and orange day marks, and some type of warning lights at night. Different rules apply in the flight patterns around airports, where anything over 200 feet, while not requiring day marks, must have warning lights. Which is why Lincoln Financal Field, and the cranes at the Port of Philadelphia and Philadelphia Naval Business Center all have red warning lights.
It’s an FAA requirement. Stacks can either be painted or lighted with strobes during the day, and must be lighted with strobes at night. They don’t have to have the ugly paint job on them. Kennecott Copper in Magna, Utah has a VERY tall stack at their smelter that does not have the ugly paint, but is lit up 24/7.
