CAzephyra: By any chance could you tell if the UP (ex SP) donner engines had the ice cicle knockdowns raised for the new clearances in the tunnels??

And if they did, would that mean the icicle-breaker engines (like stack trains) would be too tall to run track 2 Bowman to Colfax?

The GP-38-2’s with the ice breakers are OK for the tunnels. They were built with the proper height in mind for the tunnels on the Hill and were not near flush with the cab sides. . The double stacks are about the same height, but are wider in stance. If you notice the tunnel work, it is only the edge of the tunnel that has the grinders work on it. Some of the tunnels had the track lowered, but most could be made safe by the type of grinding on the upper sides as in the picture.

This is the tunnel at Newcastle and the work can be seen. I believe most of the stacks would go OK for most of the tunnels if the cars were perfectly stable, but as you know, that is not the case.

Great photos, thanks for sharing.
