My father is vacationning in Los angeles and phoenix Az. He said he likes to shop for me and he offered to go to some shops to pick up some stuff that would be good prices. Anyone know of shops in those area that carry On30 at good prices? i thought Chivers was in CA but i tried to email them and got error message everytime i tried to reach them. I think coronado is in phoenix ? what are good thing to get there?
This post is a joke, right? Vacationing in Phoenix in the summertime! That’s really good!
It’s probably been twenty-five years since I was last in Coronado. Outstanding local but narrow gauge just ain’t my type of modeling; last time I was there, however, they were full retail price. One hobby shop in town that used to offer a stock 10% discount sold a year ago or so and the new proprietor has opted to go the ‘retail price’ route. Actually, almost everyone’s middle name around these here parts is “Retailprice”.
Coronado Scale Models, 1544 E. Cypress Street, Phoenix, advertises in Model Railroader as “Narrow guage almost exclusively” (On3, Sn3, HOn3, and On30).
I’ve never been to their shop because I don’t model those scales. All of the other shops in Phoenix that I have been to charge full retail or above.
If you plan to go to Coronado I’ve been told it’s a good idea to call ahead to make sure they are open. It’s easy to miss. It’s not in the best part of town.
For narrow gauge, and in particular On30, On2, and On3, Coronado Scale Models is tops! They deal amost exclusively with narrow gauge, are extremely knowledgeable about narrow gauge modeling, and have access to a lot of propriety products that aren’t available in most garden variety LHSs. Although they sell at MSRP, they are very prompt with mail orders and ship post paid. Although I usually refuse to pay MSRP if I can get something at a discount, this hobby shop is definitely worth it when it comes to specialized products and their knowledge as the owners are narrow gauge modelers themselves.
it’s been many years since i was in the phoenix area , but a visit to the McCormick railroad park and the model railroad shop in Scottsdale was always good for an afternoon . you’ll have to check with the locals here on the forum for pricing
edit: just realized you were asking about narrow guage models . i suspect they carry very little . it’s still worth a visit though . Coronodo is the place to go for narrow guage . i was there once but didn’t have a clue about narrow guage back then and didn’t find anything interesting
