So i'm writing a book about NYC trolleys

Hi to everyone, i’m a mew member of the forum and i hope to be posing a right worthy in the right place.

So, i’m a (neo)writer and i want to write a book that contains all the rosters of all the various undertakings that once operated electric streetcars in NYC.

Clearly, i’m opening this sub as i want to ask you about certain information, as i’ve found many details about New York trolleys, but various questions remains.

Regarding the book, it would be a list complete of colored drawings of most cars. I’m doing it almost exclusively for enthusiastic purpouses, but i would like to eventually publisg the result.

For the moment i’m not in contact with any publisher; as soon as i’ve some pages complete i’ll show you them.

Welcome on board Marco. Good luck on your project.

The guy you need to hear from is David Klepper, screen name, daveklepper. He was a regular on the old forum but has yet to show up on this new version. He last posted In August 2024, just before the old forum crashed and burned. Maybe one or more of the regulars who are still here can help you.

welcome to the forum Marco . and good luck with the book.

See how many of the prior posts about NYC trolleys have ‘made it’ here; there were several names both of contributors and correspondents that you may find valuable. There were also posted links to YouTube and other sources that you’d have difficulty finding again (in their new and increasingly worthless AI-driven ‘search experience’.

Why not list your various questions so that anyone reading this thread might be able to provide some answers or, perhaps, lead you to them?

I’d suggest maybe re-doing the title of your post, changing “NYC” to “New York City”. Since NYC was the reporting marks of the New York Central railroad, people glancing over the post titles might just see the NYC and think you’re asking about New York Central and skip it, when they might actually be knowledgeable about New York City trolleys.

I was surprised at the grandiose concept. I am interested in the transition from horse trams, cable cars, streetcars, elevated railways, and even subways. Some are also shown in the 65 colorized photos in the following YouTube video.

Maybe, but I understood it to mean New York City which was well known for trolleys and New York Central wasn’t. Oh well, let’s see if it matters.

Hi, i appreciate the quick response, and i’m happy to see i’ve more or less done it all alright (feel free to change the title to New York City if you like).

Some of you asked about the questions; i can’t list all of them at the moment, as i think most will came out as i write the book, but some things i have dpubts on are the following:

  • Brooklyn and Queens transit workcars: there is a list on one of ERA magazines (2011-03 if i remember right), but this is heavily generic, so i ask you if you have any knowledge about them
  • second avenue railroad: it’s the third society operating streetcars in Manhattan (after TARS and Ny railways/green lines), and data about it seems to be almost non existent; through the site transphoto i managed to have a roster of the passenger cars inherited after the Metropolitan railway breakup, and through various other sources i’ve lined out further developments, but information about this society is still needed. Do you know anything about it?
  • richmond railways, one of the two societies operating trolleys in staten island. What color were their cars painted in?

These are all the question that came to my mind at the moment; thanks for answers

Hi to everyone.

In these days i began to wrote my book, and initially i thought to wait until i had some of the pages with drawings to post here again.

Unfortunately, i’ve found myself in front of a terrific lack of information regarding Brooklyn’s early trolleys, and it seems that the only complete roster of BMT streetcars is on a book that i can’t find anywhere.

The book is called “Brooklyn Rapid Transit Trolley Lines In Queens” by Vincent F. Seyfried, and the roster is at p88.

Does someone up there own this book? And if yes would you be so kind to send me a picture of the page?

This is the cover of the book

This is the best i could find of the page(s, i think the roster continues in the next page)

I’m bumping this specifically so Dave Klepper, who is actively posting again, will see it.

Great idea! What David DOESN’T know about New York City’s trolleys never happened anyway!

I know about Leeds City trolleys/trams. :grinning: as I helped to restore one or two.
Oh not NYC ones though.

I think I heard that Dave knew Frank Sprague.

Suggestion: Go to your public library and see if they can find a copy for you via inter-library loan. You’d be surprised by what some small town library in your state might have and be willing to loan out.

Really? I heard it was Frank Sprague who knew Dave!
