Solder will not stick?

Hi,and merry belated Christmas to all, Question i just got a bunch of code 100 Hornby switches but solder is not sticking to them. What gives? i think they must be stainless or something? what can i do?

Is the metal clean? Did you use some sort of abrasive to clean it off.

Did you use flux?

Did you get the rail hot enough?

On some switches the points and frog are a cast metal not steel or nickel silver. If Hornby does the sam it will be touch to solder to.

Also, make sure the tip of your soldering iron is clean.

i am using flux core solder and i have used steel wool to clean the ends. still not sticking, maybe i should glue them in place to the roadbed? i am using them in a latter for my yard.

Send an email to Hornby and see what they tell you.

I have done a little research and found that i should be using the Harris #8 Silver bearing solder that is what some chap on the Hornby forum told me but now it is down so i guess i will try that. he said the tin based stuff does not stick that good.

FWIW, “Solder-it”, soldering paste is silver bearing. It may work for what you need.
