Some Pretty Blurry BelDel Pics from 1948

These pictures are blurry… taken by a 12 year old in 1948… but as that 12 yr old was my dad, I would really like to know where they were taken.

My guess is that this is an A5 switcher working the BelDel somewhere near Trenton. But, I would really love to hear from those who know better.

The first is the train along a canal…

Now a close up of the engine (I assume somewhere close by)

And finally, a shot of the whole train, with what may be a recognizable factory in the background.

Thanks for looking and thanks for your help.

Neat old shots! Can’t help you at all on the locale. It is an 0-6-0, not an A5 which was an 0-4-0. Interesting variant on the coal bunker of the tender.

Hey… that’s half the puzzle solved… Thanks.

The BelDel ran up the Jersey side of the Delaware river. I forget how far north it went but that area still has portions of canals as far north as Stroudsburg Pa. Since the terrain looks fairly flat I wouldguess somehwere between Trenton and Lambertville which is about ten to fifteen miles upstream. If that is the locale there are still barge trips you can take for a couple of hours on that portion.

Charles,

Is there a city cable channel in your area? I was thinking ,Have you ever approached them about doing a program of rr’s of your area? With all the old pics you have you could supply them with and tell the story or have them interview ex rr workers of the area it might make an interesting show…

Im doing that with the city cable here in Waco,Tx. Im furnishing some video and other folks are giving narratives and suppling old photos…Just something to think about…

Hey Danny,

Neat idea… but the problem for me is that my dad’s old images are all eastcoast and I live, not only on the westcoast, but in a town that is 18 miles from the nearest railroad line (the local one was abandoned about 20 years ago).
