I know this was brought up before. This stuff is great for rusting the tops (only) of box cars. Here’s how mine came out this past weekend:
Great pics chuck. What was the product used?
It’s product called SOPHISTICATED FINISHES. It’s at Michaels and Jo Anns. It comes in a kit for 9 bucks…It’s a two-part process, http://www.modernoptions.com/SFpages/How_To_Use.html
thanks chuck
Chuck,
The Sophisticated Finishes is great stuff. Nothing looks like rust better than real rust. Its also good for things other than roofs. One thing I’ve discovered with it is that its easy to go over board with it. Apply it sparingly with a small brush ad gradually build up the finish.
For example:
Scratches on the side
Roof and sides before application of SF
I’ve seen people apply the first coat way too think and way too big and they end up with nothing but rust and it obscures all the details. Use it sparingly and consider it another tool in the weathering toolbox.
Thanks JK - Well said!
I’ve done some “heavy” rusting with this product. Here’s a bridge, now getting a much-needed paint job. The lower left shows the rust.
This was one of my first weathering attempts.
Great tip Chuck!
Going to add that item to my Michael’s list and sure to pick up a kit the next time we make a trip.
Thanks,
Ryan
I have also used this and like the results.
At the Micheal’s around me it was found in the same aisle as the cheep paints. They also had finishes for oxidized copper (That green color) and I think brass.
Why the tops only?
What’s the mystery?? I went to a hobby store and bought some rust paint, sure looks like rust to me.
Because this is really rust and we all know rust never sleeps
