sound decoder installation

How much of a challenge am I in for to install a sound decoder in a Kato SD70 MAC or a Proto SD50? Do they plug and play like regular NCE decoders? What about fitting in the speaker? What sound decoders would work best for these units?

This might help.

First go to www.LitchfieldStation.com

You’ll see rectangular boxes open up. Click in the following sequence. Allow time for each box to open up a screen:

HO
Diesel Sound

You’ll see picture samples of installations he’s performed. There are several Proto units and at least one Kato. On the side are short notes of the install, addtional info is available on some of them by clicking on the words highlighted in red.

As I’ve said on other threads, you can e-mail Bruce. He’s pretty good about answering questions, including from “Do It Yourselfers”. Just give him a few days as he can get busy with installs. Work is top notch! [:)][tup]

From what I’ve learned recently, the bodies on some “tight fitting” units act as sound baffles, but again do your research and keep asking questions.[;)]

Hope this helps! Keep us posted on your progress.

God Bless!

I just saw one of the new Kato’s SD70’s and they were identified as sound friendly, meaning that in the gas tank area below there is a provision for a speaker. Don’t know if the directions show what size will fit. Hopefully, if you have a new one, you may have not have a terrible time. The LL SD50 units for the most part need some weight taken out to fit the speaker. That is going to take some work. Haven’t put sound in anything that new yet.
