233 GE’s but no EMD’s, wow that’s a blow to LaGrange.
@ Francis x Carlin: Yea I know, for old times sake I mention LaGrange, at least some engines come outta there.
Britt,
The La Grange you refer to is no longer.
It’s now some combo of Caterpillar and Progressive, where?
…Muncie, In. …
China. The new economic leading nation. The last 6 years have ended our 162 year reign.
Because China has a government that makes long term investments in infrastructure. Exactly what the US did to become a superpower after WWII. How soon we forget.
Actually, EMD is still headquartered in LaGrange, and significant component manufacturing still occurs there, but for reasons that escape me they no longer perform final assembly of locomotives there.
I trimmed my fingernails making it tough to pick nits, but undaunted…
if, Andrew, component manufacturing happens in “La Grange,” is it done by a GM subsidiary, or one of Caterpillar’s?

And, La Grange was an adjacent community to the EMD plant and HQ. But, EMD did not live in La Grange.
An adjacent town was its true address.
EMD stopped assembling locomotives at La Grange and London because the employees have union representation.
I’m pretty sure South Africa has some build or assemble in the country clause requirements on a large investment just as most of transit cars sold in US are assembled in the US. As the article notes, only 80 of 1000 loco come into the country full assembled
Well they’ve certainly spread their orders aroung China Europe & the US everyone’s a winner sort of?
