SOUTHER PACIFIC CHICAGO - IMX

Anybody know what happened to the ol’ IMX facility on south damen, now owned by UP (ex SP). It is obviously abandoned. Does anybody know why or when? ANy other info? thanks…G-Machine

I drive by there frequently. The sign is still up, I noticed it last week and thought I should get a photo of it.

To the east is a new distribution center which caters to the produce industry. There are several companies in there that receive truckloads (not carloads) of produce and deliver.

There is also a newpaper printing company (The Sun Times) located in that area. The CN (ex IC) delivers cars of newsprint.

To the west of Damon are railroad tracks.

IMX Closed! NOOOOOO!

It was a short 20 years ago that the very first stack train ran on the ICG. It came in to IMX from St Louis afther having run the Cotton Belt. I was out there to watch it unload. I did a cigarette run for the assitant terminal manager. (I worked in marketing and I could just go on home. He had to stay until it was unloaded.) Bought him a couple packs and said good night and good luck.

They figured out stack train terminal operations kind of as an “on the job training thing”. We tried to get the operating folks to practice some, but they just figured they’d wing it. I left when I saw a car knocker take a cutting tourch to a new stack car so they could get the can off.

The guy I bought the cigarettes for was a good man, but pretty much everybody above him on the operating side was really not management material.

Yeah…gone. Only two years ago it seems I used to park my bike on damen and watch them load containers. Here’s a photo for the more nostalgic… I have more. Request it and I’l put them up.

Here’s the other side of the sign…

Note the old Illinois Central “piggyback” (literally a pig on wheels) sign hiding behind the SP one. Interesting, huh?

So why did they close it?? I thought that the UP was renting this yard. Perhaps, the new UP Global III yard opened up more space at Global I.
