Southern Pacific daylight passenger cars

Can any one tell me where i can find all of the matching stream line passenger cars that go with the Daylight?

I guess it depends on what engine you are referring to? I got these on pre order:

They are suppose to come this fall, if that is going to happen or not is anyone’s guess. But considering the supreme quality of their CZ cars it will be worth the wait.

Athearn Genisis is coming out too. Also, Athearn amkes not proto cars for Daylight, as did Bachmann Spectrum. (Thoufgh actually, the HW Daylights are actually right for the Relief Train, a Daylight painted wrecker crane, 2 bulkheads, and 3 coaches.)

One word - eBay!..

There’s hardly nothing that you can’t find on eBay. I bought over 90% of my loco and rolling stock collection there.

You would be better off getting either the BLI/PCM cars or the Athearn Genesis cars. Athearn already has a pilot model out but, BLI/PCM is using the models imported by Challenger. It appears the Athearn will release their models before BLI/PCM does. Athearn’s pilot model is an SP GS 77 Chair car.

From what I understand, the Athearn/Genesis Daylight will be based on the original 1937 train and the BLI cars are slated to be for the post-WWII Daylight. It looks as if the Genesis cars will be released first, and from what I’ve seen of preview photos, they’re really beautifully detailed. It’s probably going to be a waiting game for the BLI’s, so it will be interesting to see which cars hit the market first. And with both MTH and BLI promising early fall releases of their respective GS-4’s, it’s going to be a kind of busy year for Daylight fans.

In my case, I’ve already got a terrific brass Balboa GS-4, so I’m just waiting to see who releases the passenger cars first. [:P]

The Athearn Genisis cars will be correct for the 1937 train but later the cars went into a pool of cars and were mixed with cars from the 1939 and 1941 trains. The cars were assigned to the Daylight and Noon Daylight on the Coast Route and to the San Joaquin Daylight. Some were painted in U.P. colours for use on the Overland Route and others were painted in Lark/Cascade 2-Tone Grey when coaches were added to those trains.

The older Blue Box Athearn Daylight cars are NOT CORRECT for any Espee Daylight trains. They are loosly based on Santa Fe cars. Except for the dome they do make an attractive train for a low cost.

Years ago, I bought all the Athearn blue box SP Daylight cars along with an ABBA set of Athearn PA-1s. While not prototypical, they make a very inexpensive 18 foot long passenger set that looks great in any show where kids are involved. Adults are way too picky but the kids love it.

TWO imprters (Athearn & Broadway Ltd.) have made noises about bringing out the ‘Daylight’ cars but it’s doubtful we’ll get much.

  1. SP’s ‘Daylight’ cars were ‘one-of-a-kind’ with corregated sides, larger-than-normal windows, side baggage doors, full width diaphrams, and 3 color proprietary paint scheme - and unlikely candidates for mass marketing.

Oh yes, and Articulated cars with special trucks.

… and this for a market that wants cheap - Generic cars (no prototype) painted up for whatever road. (Wathers ‘Budd’ are selling because many RR’s had them).

OK, we probably can get get painted up IHC cars in 3 colors, but who cares if the red is right? We already have corregated-sided, 3 color cars from Athearn, (and the red is good).

If you want a ‘‘complete’’ Daylight train, you’ll have to buy brass. Current offerings are $400 car. A few ‘kit makers’ have offered individual cars - unpainted (MHP) but 'Daylight ’ cars have 4 colors (with the lettering) to mask, if painting.

ConCor ran a series of corregated 80 footers pre-painted, that looked nice, but owner retired. Athearn’s streamlined ‘Daylight’ are repainted 72’ ATSF cars, but look nice - if not authentic. MHP’S Richard Wright retired, and an occasional brass or kit car will surface, so …

Don’t hold your breath. BLI produces half of what they talk about. Athearn is not in the $80 car market. IF Walthers is succesful with their ‘Hiawatha’ cars, we may see some SP 'Daylight’s produced. Notice Walthers is building and releasing one car at a time over a year period.

I don’t forsee BLI or Athearn releasing any Artiulated cars - ever. Could I BE WRONG? Sure, but I have spent years

“IS” maybe too trong a word. Half of what they talk about never see the light of day and even scheduled items get cancelled.

For the reasons given I think 1. The price may be too high to sell and 2. few cars will be offered. 3 Only SP had them, and 4. BLI has been pulling back.

Walthers is taking a chance on their ‘Hiawatha’ series - another ‘one-of-a kind’ home-made destinctive car (only Milwaukee Road had them). They’ll become Collector’s Items.

Kato is coming out with the entire Daylight with the articulated passenger cars and GS-4

YES All brass, @ $400-$450 per car RTR at Whistle Stop, Pasadena, CA.

How many do you want?

Don, modelers don’t want cheap generic cars. If that were the case, then we wouldn’t be seeing the models that are being released by the manufacturers. I have to give Athearn credit as they all ready have a pilot model were as BLI doesn’t but, that doesn’t mean BLI will retract their commitment to the Daylight. I do expect the articulated chair cars to be released. If I modeled SP passenger trains, then an Articulated chair car would be nice but, I model business trains and my equipment is even more specialized than the cars of the Daylight.

Finally some good news from BLI/PCM. On the Broadway Limited Forum was just stated that work is advancing and here is the answer from Matthew Williamson to my question about the GS-4:

“I can’t give a definitive date on the GS-4 until I have finished samples. We have completed several of the cars. I will post firm dates for both as soon as possible.”

I really am looking forward to these models and I hope that we will see some pics soon…
