SP 4449 on Union Pacific property

Why Union Pacific wants 4449 out of the Brooklyn roundhouse in the near future. How come.

My undrestanding of UP absorption of other lines is to take one word from each railroad. Example 1- Union from Union Pacific and Pacific from Misourri Pacific making Union Pacific. Example 2 Union from Union Pacific and Pacific from Southern Pacific making Union Pacific. So they may want it off property or it may be headed for the steel mill as scrap. They may also being getting rid of the facility to reduce property tax.

4449 headed for the steel mill as scrap???[:0][:0][:0].There is a white boxcar with shackles waiting for you right outside your door!!!

The Southern Pacific now belongs to the Union Pacific, however, I believe the 4449 still belongs to the city of Portland. I don’t believe the UP would go to the point of scrapping it.

Move it to Cheyene, maybe.

Kinda hard for Unka Pete to do anything to it. They do not own it so thye have no say in it.

Yes, the SP has been owned by the UP for a while now. I seriously don’t think they would scrap that beauty. Theres is alot of history behind her, remember she pulled the freedom train[:)] It doesn’t make sense to me that they would scrap it, if there running excursions on the UP line, doesn’t that make the Union Pacific some money?
Chris

The city of Portland owns the 4449,so she is safe for now. The groups that have locomotives in the roundhouse are raising money to move from the roundhouse to another location in the Portland area. Union Pacific is NOT pushing them to leave at the moment,AFAIK.

Ican see the UP moving the steam locomotive to another. Bur where they dont own it it they cant scrap it. The engineer that runs it and maintains it is a retired hoghead from the UP. (not that it matters) They will find a new home for it.

Chrismoore, welcome! Rover 2003, you joined on my 14th birthday!
On topic:(sort of) There was a diesel that pulled the freedom train too, right? If so, what became of it?
Matthew

I thought the 4449’s roundhouse was a BNSF property? Did the City Of Portland sell the 4449 to the Yellow Horde?

As obnoxious and arrogant as the UP may be I don’t think even those slimeballs would scrap something that didn’t belong to them…but then again!!!

trainboy H16-44 I think you might be thinking of the Freedom Train of the late 1940s. It was a Santa Fe baggage car and 4 or 5 PRR P-70 coaches pulled by an Alco PA, all painted in a red white and blue livery. It’s purpose was to display various historical documents (Declaration of Independece, Constitution, etc) at various venues around the country.
