SP Olympic SD40R

Can anyone help me out. I would like to know what are the colors used to paint this locomotive in it’s 1984 Olympic Scheme. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello my name is Larry
i think it was painted patriotic colors but am not totally sure cannot remember as i have only seen pictures of this unit in trains magazine i also think it is going to be the only way to find out as i do believe this locomotive was DESTROYED in a california earthquake back in the 90’s sometime i may be wrong on this as i only remember a SP loco was crushed under an overpass in that quake that i remember had a special paint job on it i may be thinking of another unit altogether entirely my suggestion would be to contact trains magazine an see if they can be of any assistance to you.

hope this helps ya out some
if you find out for sure do contact me as i am sorta interested to know as well

Could it have been in a head on collision under a highway bridge.

Hello Javier,

MODEL RAILROADER published a Paint Shop article about that locomotive in the September 1986 issue, page 154. Back issues of MR are available on the “Shopping” portion of this Web site. If that issue is out of print you can order a photocopy of the article from customerservice@kalmbach.com.

Best wishes,

Andy

Thanks everyone for the great info. I’ll surely look into aquiring that issue, if not the photocopy of it.

Thanks once again.

Javier

The Sp SD40R in question ceased to exist under the highway at Wadsworth and 120th ave in Broomfield Colorado. It happened on the curent BNSF front range sub. The resulting fire destroyed the highway brige. All of the train crew was lost. I do not remember the date or year.

Athearn produced an SD40-2 model of this unit. It was painted nicely, but did not have all of the fanct details, Sp lights, plow, etc.
