speed control

I like everything on the new Lionel catalog, but what is that new thing called “Legacy Speed Control System”? Does that control the speed like the “Odyssey System”., which is on the expensive engines? This is the first time I’ve seen this. I really like the GP7 that has this.

Apparently what has happened is that Lionel has incorporated a tachless speed control system into Legacy. Also appears they will still be using Odyssey as a lower feature.

On the OGR forum John from Electric RR, who has developed a tachless speed control system for his company, has announced that he has worked with LionTech to make this happen. This new speed control is supposedly the bomb and superior to all others.

Only time will tell.

Mike, from your info, do you believe that the legacy is an internal electrical system contained in the loco or is it a cab controller issue or both? I am puzzled. In any event, I guess there might be an after market fix.

[:)][:)]Mike, Wow I didn’t know that. That was one of the reasons I wouldn’t buy most engines because it would push the price way up there with the Odyssey System. Now I notice some lower price engines have that. An engine without speed control, you cannot run it slow (like the country/western song says, “I like slow moving freights”) I’m going to look into those new GP7’s. Thanks[:)][:)]

From what I’ve read and heard, the Legacy cruise system will be superior to Odyssey in a number of ways.

First off, the Achilles’ Heel of Odyssey has always been the magnetized wheel on the flywheel. According to Billy at Millburn Train & Hobby there are something like 28 poles on the ring, each pushing against the other. This is what causes the rings to explode.

According to Jon at the Electric RR Co. there will be no ring, and no sensor.

Instead, the speed is controlled using EMF, or ElectroMechanicalFeedback. From what I understand, (and I think MartyE who has installed one of these in his Polar Express can explain better!) the motherboard reads the amount of EMF off the motor, and automatically adjusts power to compensate. In theory this system should provide a smoother, more reliable cruise for your engines. This was the original idea behind Lionel’s “Odyssey Motor” which never made it into production.

And in theory, it should be adaptable to PullMor motors too. In theory.

The interesting thing is, once these are tooled up for production, the parts and installation should actually be considerably LESS than Odyssey.

If I bought a new engine with the new Legacy Speed control System, can I use the present TMCC remote that I have now. Will it work? In other words, will these new engines work and run with my TMCC system? It’s hard to believe that something could be better that the Odyssey System. I think it operates great, but then, I haven’t seen the Legacy work. Thanks in advance for any infomation. Reuben

TMCC will work fine with new Legacy engines. You will only have 32 speed steps, not the 200 that Legacy boasts. As far as how the Tachless sytem works…it works good!
