I am going in a few days to a restoration of steam trains and about any train you can think of. They have a huge round house that is still working. I can take some pics. If ya’ll would like and post them (If I can find out how to do that) or email them. You can go to Spencer NC on you search and it will come up. Its huge. So let me know I will be more than happy to do that. I will be going Fri. So let me know. Thanks
Hope you have a great time!
Will you be near the CSX mailine that runs north to D.C and South to Florida? If so, you should see plenty of CSX and Amtrak action as well.
Work that Camera!
Stay safe.
I would be happy to see any pix, especially of steam, big or small. Thank-you for the offer, and I hope you have a blast!
Spencer is fantastic! Esp during its “train days” which was last month or so. I’ve made the train day shows twice and have made another trip there. Depending on the weekend they may be running the Graham County Shay #1925. If not they are generally running an older diesel or so. Got over two hundred photos from last two trips both digital and film. No matter where you are if you find yourself near Charlotte, NC, take the short trip on I-85 to Spencer. Iys well worth it.
I was just there last weekend. The mainline that runs right next to the NC Transportation musuem is Norfork Southern, not CSX. The musuem is fantastic, but you really can’t see much of the NS mainline due to a thick row of trees that effectively seperates the musuem and the mainline. You can hear trains running past almost all day, you just can’t see much of them.
Right across the street from the Spencer gift shop is a fantastic model railroad hobby store. It is a “must see” if you make up to Spencer. Just ask anyone who works at the musuem where it is.
Awesome place to go, and the train store across the street “Little Choo Choo Shop” is the best. All the N and HO scale stuff is in the back room. And the mainline next to the museum is NS. My father-in-law , retired from NS took me up there twice and showed me the mainline and took me to the tower to watch train humping in Spencer. I want to go back.
I went and i have some pics but i cant download them 0on here and if anybody wants to see them i can email them. the pics. might take a while due to size. we just got a new camera and still trying to figure it out.
Hey Guy’s:
I live just a few miles from this Museum, Me and the grandson(railhead) are there about twice a month. Never get tired or bored with it.
I travel a great deal and have visited many train museums around the country and this one is by far the best there is. Much better than Roanoke !
The Norfolk Southern Duel Main runs right past the park. And the linwood humping yard is only a couple miles north of it.
Lots of great rail action along this line, A couple miles south of the park on the same road is a hot spot, It is a switch split for the old Salisbury to Ashville route. Still in use by NS. And the local AMTRAK station is a restored Southern Railway station right there in Salisbury as well. Just last weekend we saw a NS flatbed train there loaded with military tractors, Graders, excavaters, backhoes,Rollers etc. Just think, A train load of tractors !! I thought the granson was going to blow a fuse !!
If you ever have a chance to come here, Do it you will not be sorry !!!
