And when the switching yards are moved “out of town”, the developers will swoop in and build hundreds of “country” homes, and five years later the homebuyers will be screaming about the noise and environmental effects. Ask any airport operator in the country. A pox on the NIMBY’S!
I thought they had other railyards at other locations that were under-utilized or closed-down after the railroad was reorganized.
This situation reminds me of the issues surrounding the acquisition of the EJ&E that remain to be resolved despite assurances to the contrary by CN.
Rightfully or wrongly CN seems to be a sort of involuntary bull in the china shop with it’s neighbors as of late.
It will be interesting to see how this issue is mitigated as well as the remaining issues with the former EJ&E.
Bring the project to Savanna,Il we could use more jobs here
I don’t see why the CP and other railroads can’t or won’t see the handwriting on the wall. They all need to move their switching yards out of the metropolitan areas and into the countryside away from the population. I believe the NS has just completed a new yard away from the congestion in line with this thinking. the UP was way ahead of the ball when they relocated theirs to North Platte, Ne. and Hinkle, Or… Money aside, the rest are going to have to follow suit or enrich the lawyers fighting it.

As if EHH cares about the environment. All he cares about is $$$$, and screw everything else.
Perhaps someone might add clarification here…if the “Dunn yard alongside the Mississippi” is the old Milw. Rd. Pig’s Eye yard, then any housing is above on the bluffs and any expansion of the yard is likely to be a return to its former size and capacity.
Paul,
EHH is paid big $$ to care about $$$$, the environment, not so much.
What are CP’s plans for mitigation? The article mentions that there are plans once and that outside groups are calling them inadequate, but does not say what they are.
