Three stood out for me. Craig’s, Alex’s and Brandon"s. It was hard to choose just one but voted for Alex’s because it wasn’t just one thing that made the photo stand out. The scenery, two trains and clearness of the photo did it for me.
Stacks and Pigs( with a tag-a-long of auto carriers) are the major traffic around here. my favorite watching spot is by the old Santa Fe station at Mulvane (Ks) (now the Town Museum).
It is on the point where most of the traffic must pass. It being at the center of an ‘X’ . It used to be ( at least last year; The traffic was kind of segregated ( TOFC/COFC/ Auto Racks) Now a Double Stacker can have a string of TOFC and a few Auto Carriers on the end. Some trains run to the area of 10,000 footers, and of late shorter ( have seen a few trains with 18 to 25 cars of Double Stacks, as well).
Generally, the trains have anywhere from four to three units under power on the head-end. The Bare Table moves have a couple of units, as do the auto rack moves, some of the longer might have three on the head end. Power Moves can have as many as eight units with generally only a couple( depending on the length and class of train) under power.
Merchandise trains seem to run lots of tank cars mixed in with all other types of cars, ( mixed blocks picked up at various locations?). Amount to about two or three a day,. The Coal trains seem to move down to the ark city sub and on to Oklahoma and Texas (empty and loaded) SK&O runs a trackage rights train out of Winfield to Wichita in the afternoons ( rock hopper sand tanks).
Mulvane is a pretty good spot to watch what happens around here.
