Steam Crane Plans/Drawings?

I’m looking for plans for a Steam Wrecker/Derrick in the 100-150 ton range. Ideally 100-125 ton, like the Tichy crane. I’ve found a few railroad equipment diagrams, but beyond rough dimensions, these aren’t detailed enough.

I’m working in S scale, or I’d just go with the offering from TTG. I haven’t been able to find anything comparable in S.

Derricks were not usually built by railroads. As the detailed drawings belonged to the manufacturers, you need to look at what may be available from them,

Brownhoist (nee Brown Hoisting Machinery Company) was absorbed into Industrial Works to become Industrial-Brownhoist, now defunct. Bucyrus (aka Bucyrus-Erie) is now a mining division of Siemens. I don’t necessarily need the full detailed blueprints, I was wondering more if anyone knew where some elevation drawings could be found.

I’ve already looked in the magazine index, and aside from small derricks and the largest 200-250 ton “big hooks” there isn’t a whole lot out there.

Do a Google search for railroad steam crane. I did and there is stuff around. Take something like a wheel size and scale up to S scale. It will require some homework by you.

I’ve got several photos that will be useful for final detailing, but the problem with most of them is that the wheels disappear in the shadows. The few that don’t are in such perspective that measurements are not practical, I was hoping to find some drawings out there somewhere.

There is a similar crane at a rail museum up the road, I’ll make my own photos to scale. Unfortunately the boom is hidden inside a gondola, so I’ll just have to make do. Talk about “homework.”

If it’s photos of prototypes you’re looking for, try northeastrailfan.net. There is a whole section on MOW equipment in almost every RR livery. I found some photos that were invaluable when turning an old Bachmann crane and tender car (bought on the cheap at a show) into an MOW painted and numbered in CN colors (just had to change it from steam to diesel[:-^]. Some of the photos are in color and fine enough detail to enable one to properly decal the equipment. Gerry S.

You’d have it easy in the 200-250 ton range, modify an AF Offering, I too work in S, though not the easiest alternative, I have been known to purchase models in other scales and reverse engineer to S, when no longer needed they can be sold to produce some income for your next S project. Keep a accurate set of divders if you choose this route!

You may have already found these drawings on the Northern Pacific archives. There is not a lot of detail but, give the overall dimensions.

Here is an example.

My reference for the Santa Fe is mostly of photographs:

(Edit: when I entered this list, each derrick or boom car number was on a separate line for easy reading but the trains.com website removed all the spacing when posted. Sorry.)
