I hope this link works. It contains large video files that you can open, so dial-up users, if you really want to see them, you’ll have to walk away for several minutes while it downloads for you, probably. Sorry.
If time is tight for you, the longest, and by far the best is the third, a standstill start of UP #844 filmed until near top speed…whew! Quality is okay, not great, dated somewhat, but I think worth a look.
Outstanding stuff. I can’t believe it has been that long since #844 got her original number back. This is the first video I’ve seen of her in gray livery. I wish Rivarossi’s original model of her (then #8444) had come with an oil tender.
Does anyone know what kind of car that is at the tail of the consist?
Had to have been in 1989 (as the author wrote) when 844 got her number back but was still in Greyhound paint, because I think in the next year or so she was painted back into good 'ole black. Great vids.
Great sound too!!! (particularly on the first clip.) The floor under my computer was shaking… That’s the kind of sound I associate with trains (and the reason sound equiped scale locos don’t make it for me. Great clip, thanks! (Scared the livin’ crap outa my cats… LOL)
[:p]Great,I’ve an nother one of 844 going from stoped to about 40 or 50.[:p]love it.Now when HO sound get that good and sells for under $100.00
I’am in!!!
JIM
P.S. brings tears to the eyes when I here the whistle[:D][^]
If you have dial up, just right click on the links and choose “save target as…” and you can download them and play them back. SUPER videos! Thanks!!! (I picked the highest quality and them worked fine)
I try not to clutter up my hard drive with files from the internet, but I have saved this one, plus about four others that are of UP #3985.
In fact, type “video,Union Pacific #3985” into the search field on the yahoo home page, and at the top of the entries will be three or four videos that you can download. They change often, so you can go back and get new ones…some fair, some excellent.
Anyway, I am happy to see that some of we warm-blooded rail fans are still around. Thanks for dropping by.
Oh Crandell, thank you for posting that. That’s actually the first real video I have seen of a BIG steam moveing. That 79 MPH chase is just incredible to watch. I downloaded all of them and will be showing the kiddo tommorow! [:D]
It was my pleasure, believe me, John. [:D] I would love to watch your son’s face when he senses the change of dynamics when the engineer yanks open the throttle at about one and a half minutes into the video. The part I like best is near the three minute mark when the highway and the track get closest, the speed of the loco is near the highest in the segment, and the valve gear is working and clicking like it was one of our own engines. It just don’t get no better’n that.
