Steam trams in HO

What companies make or made steam trams in HO scale???

What steam trams are you interested in? British? European? American?

I ask because there are HO models out there, but they are definitely a niche product.

Egger once made a rather nice little HOe model of a typical Henschel “kastenlok”, which is commonly known as “Fiery Elias”. Weinert Modellbau do a kit for the Plettenberger Jung locos, in either HOe or HOm.

Jocadis of Belgium make kits for the Vicinal Type 18 locos built by Tubize and others.

There are also kits for trams engines built by Backer & Ruab - “Breda” - in the Netherlands. I’m not sure offhand who makes these.

Tramalan in the UK used to make a whitemetal kit for a Kitson motor, which may still be available.

Far North Hobbies in Australia make a resin kit for a Baldwin steam dummy and trailer car. Ken Kidder used to sell a brass Baldwin dummy, as well.

There are more that I know of, but you get the idea. What are you looking for?

Cheers,

Mark.

Actually I like all of them! I’ll check into the ones that you mentioned, do you know of any others?

Well, there are few others that I’m aware of.

There’s a recent English resin model for a Great Eastern J70 - the real life inspiration for “Toby” of TTTE fame. I’m away from home for a few days, so I haven’t got access to the magazine I saw these kits advertised in.

KTM used to make a kit for a Japanese prototype self-propelled steam tramcar. I’ve also seen some HOe kits for Japanese tram locos and cars, but I have no idea who the manufacturer was, other than that they were vey small companies.

Philotrain were the makers of some of the Dutch models I’ve seen, but again, a lot of what’s been available for Netherlands prototypes has been produced by very small cottage manufacturers. You might need to make contact with a club or hobby shop there to find out more.

There used to be a French company called Panier, who made a few steam tramway items, but I believe they went out of business a few years back.

The only other tram model I can think of at the moment was German - a Pfalz enclosed 0-6-0 - I think they were made by Weinert?

If you find it difficult to obtain steam tram models, you might consider scratchbuilding. Most locos are enclosed, or at least have the wheels and motion covered, so they’re not difficult things to build. Drawings aren’t hard to come by, if you know where to look.

All the best,

Mark.
