I have been looking for a kit or plans to an “old time” wooden stiff leg derrick for a turn of the century quarry I’m modeling. Can anyone point me in the direction od where to find drawings or a kit to build.

Call Valley Model Trains http://www.valleymodeltrains.com/668ho.html or Walthers and see if they still have Sheepscot Scale Products 1063 Hocking Bro. Hoisting Co. kit in stock. Or, if you can find an Arvid L. Anderson 3050 HO Logging Camp kit at a swap meet or on E-bay, it is another possibility. Some stone works kits, such as Walther’s 3073 Midstate Marble Works include a jib crane. Also, Underground Railway Press lists Washington Iron Works WIW-7356 35 Ton Steel Stiff-Leg Derrick plans in 1/8 " scale, but I have no idea what era it represents, and of course, is steel rather than wood or simulated wood.

Go to the Index of Magazines at this site, enter the term “derrick” as a keyword, and, in the list that results, you’ll find at least three plans for stiff leg derricks that you can use. One plan is in OO, but you can rescale it if you wish on a copier at the local Staples or Kinkos. (Take your scale ruler with you, I don’t know the exact reduction from 4 mm to 3.5 mm scale). You may have to use Inter Library Loan at your local public library or haunt used book/magazine stores for some of the citations, or check with members at any nearby model railroad clubs. You might find the kits I mentioned at a swap meet.

Two of the best kits I am aware of for funky looking stiff leg derricks are:
Schomberg Scale Models: This is a derrick run by a flathead V8 on a wooden sled. Nice parts and castings.
Keil Line Models: Great detail, but not sure if they have the kit in HO. check Valley Model Trains. This kit is worth the money. Make sure you use elastic thread to represent your cables. It stretches nicely.
