As an update, I will mention that the ads are still all over the place on my laptop, and trying to read threads on my iPhone has become next to impossible because the ads keep on coming and pushing the thread off the screen. I cannot read a single thread on my iPhone in the past few days. And, all these days later, I have yet to see a single ad even remotely related to the hobby of model railroading, or to any hobby for that matter.
Interesting. Iâm using a Samsung phone almost exclusively to access the forums and while I see ads theyâre pretty much unobtrusive and donât impact my experience. Theyâre most certainly targeted based on my browsing history (as pretty much all ads are in the world we live in today). My read of the thread seems to indicate that train/hobby centric ads would be a separate stage that will be hopefully implemented on some future date. Thereâs just not enough interest out there for targeted ads to automatically generate with that content.
Something that needs to be revised or just done away with is the âbottomâ ad for Flex-I-File. It randomly pops up and blocks the controls on the reply window on an iPhone 14, and I have to repeatedly try to click the little âcloseâ X on the tab without magically expanding the ad. This can get very tedious when typing a post much longer than a few lines.
It also hogs bandwidth for those who operate on the edge of the envelope. Still, at least those adsâand the Tamiya onesâare much better targeted than the Etsy ads.
Iâm not sure how much longer Iâll be bothered by inappropriate ads on this site. Frankly, I wasnât aware that there was such a thing as an âappropriate adâ. If a site canât afford free forums, they should make it abundantly clear that they want more for your data than your loyalty.
How is this âof interest to modelersâ? If Crown canât block these kinds of ads, I will have to think harder about canceling all my subscriptions to their publications. Frankly, I donât need any ads in your forums.
I have been using ad-blockers on all of my computers and web browsers for many years, so I donât see too many ads. On my Android smartphone, I prefer to use web browsers with ad-blockers. And I also block many of the ads with DNS filtering on both my smartphone and computers. That even helps to block a lot of the ads inside various Android apps. And I have a custom âhostsâ file on my computer, which blocks even more ads and malware. I use multiple layers of filtering and protection, to keep myself safer online. And I use the open source Linux operating system on all my computers, instead of MS Windows or MacOS. For extra control of what my computer is doing.
Ridiculous. This thread has been since January and they are still popping up? As bad as the old Clambake Forum was, I donât remember any adult ads. Of course, I had really good no-longer-available blockers on my XP machines (AdBlockPlus with add-on Element Picker, for one), but they wonât let you use XP here so you can have a âricher experienceâ. That must be AI Code Name for Adult Ads?
