So I decided to go to the local “hobby shop”, it’s really an Ace Hardware with 2 isle’s of model stuff, cars & trains. Was planning on picking up a book that I’ve been looking for, but instead my the voice in my head got me to buy a locomotive. They had a couple Athearn RTR engines there for relatively cheap. Choices came down to a BNSF GP60, BNSF GP50, or a CP GP40x. The two BNSF’s were painted with the new swoosh and the CP was the newer looking scheme of all red with just the lettering. Now I’m not a big fan of the Athearn locomotives because of all the noise, but seeing the two swoosh paint schemes for $74 and $69 was a hard bargin to pass up, the CP was also $74. After about 30 minutes of pondering about whether or not to get it and will I have enough money in my savings to survive until I start working in 2 weeks, I said what the heck and picked up the BNSF GP50.
I already have a Heritage II scheme BNSF GP60 so I figured this would be a nice addition, especially with the new paint. I guess that first CP locomotive will have to wait for awhile…
Sorry this is of little importance or anything, but this was my first train purchase in about a year and a half. Feels good to be back into the hobby. Hopefully I won’t stray away again.
Edit: I just looked on railpictures and found pictures of the locomotive I bought, same number and everything, BNSF GP50 3126. Not sure if the model I bought was a custom paint or what, but still pretty cool. I’ve actually seen this locomotive doing the local work along the Mississppi when I go home. May have to stop and look for it this weekend.
