The last time I picked up a perscription at the drug store, the clerk asked, “Do you have any questions?”
“What is the capital of Ethiopia?” I replied. I then smiled, leaving him with a puzzled expression.
A certain well-known American political figure was born 9 months after alien flying saucers landed in Roswell, New Mexico, according to some accounts. This person would applaud the proposed development of a high-speed intercity rail service in the United States. Who is it?
Hey, it says stupid questions. You’ll have to find the answers yourselves…
It depends on where you are. On Earth, it’s 52 weeks. A year is a measurement of time; time remains constant. A year on Mars, though, is longer… hehhehheh… I knew all those episodes of “Lost in Space” would come in handy someday.
Seriously… are they really not at the exact mileage in the USA? Here they are required to be right on the spot (subject to having fallen over/been knocked over/vandalised all of which are pretty rare). It’s sometimes surprising to see the lengths gone to to provide a location for a post… followed by the variations made to standard posts to make sure they will fit/stay in place. In recent years a few “posts” have been painted onto walls.
The older posts are often set extremely deep into concrete and so may remain long after the track has gone. You can also sometimes get several generations of post which seems to be a waste of money. They usually line up perpendicualr to the track. (Older ones were often set back close to the boundary).
We also have 1/4 mile posts that are required to be in the correct place. This makes for a lot of posts.
On each territory they all get repainted (usually bright yellow) every so often. Some of the older ones are almost more paint than original material.
They tried an experiment with new road style round signs in blue recently but seem to have given up on it. Why blue???
All our bridges have their miles and chains marked on them.
There’s no attempt to go metric on track distance… except that the overhead stanchions for electrification are marked to kilometers - from London mostly.
The Golden Spike National Historic Site is at a really remote place in the Utah desert. You drive many miles of empty two-lane blacktop to get there. I understand that one lady, after arriving, asked a Park Ranger:
“Couldn’t they have put this closer to the Interstate?”
I was in a co-op store. They often have piles of boxed “special” items like garden furniture that just haven’t sold in the season. This store had a load of. “Square Charcoal Barbeque Grills”… so I asked the checkout girl if they had any square charcoal… she called her supervisor who went to look… she came back and said they had none on the shelves and went straight off to check the stockroom ignoring my “okay not to worry”… came back with the manager with the hard copy of their order book.
By this time I had got my stuff through the checkout. I guess they thought I was a secret customer as they were genuinely working hard to find the product for me. This had got in so deep and the queue behind me so long I didn’t dare tell them it was a daft question and just said “not to worry” as I had to get to work. They took my phone number so they could call me! They got the name and number of a manager I didn’t like… I wonder how that call went…
I’d think I was rotten but they ignored my saying “okay, don’t bother”.
More recently I had a computerised checkout lock up and start going “BEEP”. More and more staff came over to prod the keyboard and “assist” the checkout guy. It just kept going “BEEP”… so I said to them "Excuse me… it’s reversing lights aren’t working e
Mailman walks up to the door and says " Got a parcel for you mam, please sign here". Lady replies" What in it?“. Mailman replies " I don’t know, my X-RAY vision is not working today”.
