Substitute for Celluclay!

I can’t find celluclay in this area. I want to try making ground goop that Lou Sassi uses. Any suggestions? Thanks

Before making a substitution I think that I would try an online source.

Is it not vermiculite that is the modern go-to for celluclay? If I am correct, any large garden center should be able to order some of the ‘fine’ vermiculite from a supplier. It is no longer dangerous because the places where it was mined where there was asbestos are no longer able to sell to the public in N. America.

The rest of the world is another matter, unfortunately.

Crandall has it - You need the ‘fine’ ground Vermiculite.

Celluclay is paper mache, vermiculite is not like it, though I think it is another ingredient in ground goop. Maybe you could Google (sorry) paper mache and get the formula and make your own. Seems to me it is chopped up newspaper and water, but there might be something else to it.

Good luck,

Richard

Celluclay is papier mache – ground up newspapers and dry wallpaper paste. If you have a cross-cut paper shredder you could make your own by just using any type of glue, such as Elmer’s white glue.

The “Ground Goop” formula is not that critical on what you use or in what quantities to achieve acceptable results. I mix my own using casting plaster, white glue, dirt from my back yard, sand, finely ground redwood bark mulch, potting soil, acrylic paints from Wal-mart, and/or lots of other ingredients depending on what I have on hand and the resulting texture I want to achieve.

In that case, and thanks for chiming in guys, Sculptamold is probably quite close?
