My family and I are planning a day trip by train to New York City this week. While there, we may go to see Hell Gate Bridge from the vantage point of Astoria Park in Queens. If we go to see that beautiful bridge, we would take the N or W subway to the Astoria Blvd. or Ditmars Blvd. stops.
Would you please tell me, is the walk safe from these subway stops to Astoria Park during daylight hours?
I don’t think that I am concerned about the subway ride. Our family has been riding New York and Philadelphia subways (including out to Coney Island) since our girls were toddlers.
Safety is fine. Maybe there could be an occasional problem in a lonely spot in a park, but certainly the neighborhood is safe during the day. My suggestion is to walk north from the Ditmars Blvd terminal a half-block to Ditmars Blvd, then walk west. Enjoy the city!
BellmoreBob’s guidance was right on and much appreciated. My family and I made the trip on 4/17/06, Easter Monday. We found the Astoria part of Queens to be very pleasant. We even had dinner there. I couldn’t help think that this would be a nice place to live.
On several occassions I have seen Hell Gate Bridge and Astoria Park from an Amtrak train. It was great this time to see it from the ground.
