Sunnyside Yards Housing Project

Apparently Sunnyside Yards is possibly going to be covered over (!) for a large new housing project. A steel deck is to be built with housing for thousands of people erected on top of it.

When riding trains to Connecticut or Long Island, I’ve always enjoyed looking at the place and seeing all the trains and equipment stored there; in the 1970’s it was particularly interesting to the viewer. If it gets covered over, it’s going to be as dark as the area underneath Hudson Yards just west of Penn Station; I wouldn’t want to work there. Also, I wonder how it’ll hold up fifty years from now as all that steel begins to age. Anyway, here’s the article describing the project from yesterday’s New York Times:

This sounds interesting…

Some 20 years ago, I recommended that they not scrap the best of the AEM7s, but regear them and modify them for switcher in the covered yard. Nowthey will have tobbuy new electric twitchers or spend gobs of money for far-greater-capacity ventilation and its silencing.
