Ive had a LL GP9 for a couple years in the box brand new. Put in service recently and found out it has some bad gears in both trucks. I took it all apart and the spacing seams wrong for the axle gears. I was wondering if Earnst makes a kit for these? I have old Athern SD9 with them and they are great.
Why not check to see if Proto 2000 trucks can be used. They are the high locomotives made by LifeLike.
It is Proto 2000
check with LL,I believe they had a problem with gearing some time back, and made a better replacement.
Contact LifeLike in Baltimore, explain what you have (exact model stock number) and see if they have replacement truck assemblies. They sent me replacements for a BL-2 model at no charge and they even paid the postage.
I’m not sure about the GP9 but I have a couple Proto 2000 GP60s and a GP30, and the trucks are virtually identical to Athearn blue box/RTR trucks. I took one apart and the Athearn gears will drop right in. I also have an early Proto 2000 SD9 (from the mid '90s)and it has a different kind of mechanism. If your GP9 is the later style, you should be able to use Athearn parts (or the Ernst kit for Athearn GPs if you prefer).
I had the same problem with my P2K GP-9. I emailed Life Like, and they shipped me two sets of drive wheels, and did so VERY quickly. My problem is now solved, and I now have an additional set “just in case”.
I had a chance to look at one of the recent Proto 2000 GP9i models and sure enough, it’s got the same Athearn-like trucks.
