Is Amtrak overhauling Superliners?
As of the end of FY18 Amtrak had 244 Superliner I cars, with an average age of 38 years, and 184 Superliner II cars with an average age of 23 years.
For FY19 Amtrak planned to overhaul 54 Superliner I cars, including 29 coaches, 8 sleepers, 8 lounge cars, 5 dining cars, and 4 diner lounge cars. Also planned for overhauls were 50 Superliner II cars, including 15 coaches, 12 sleepers, 9 transitional sleepers, 7 dining cars, and 7 lounge cars. The company also planned to overhaul 9 Surfliner cars, which are coaches and/or cab cars.
For FY20 the plan is to overhaul 114 Superliner I and II cars.
My Superliner experience is pretty much confined to the Texas Eagle between DFW and San Antonio. I have ridden in several cars that appeared to have been overhauled recently.
Amtrak used to show the number of overhauls in the Monthly Performance Reports, but it has ceased doing so. In any case, in the past the number of actual overhauls was pretty close to what had been planned.
Thanks!
