Supplemental Workplace Lamp

I do most workbench work at my desk, with lighting provided by a flourescent desk lamp and normally supplemented when needed with a bright LED headlamp. Waiting for a prescription fill at Walgreens, I noticed this $6 12-LED lamp (3 AA battery) lamp and bought it to try as a faster supplemental light. I put it atop a piece of 2x4 as a booster, attached with velcro to allow baterry compartment access. Time will tell whether this impulse buy was justified.

Keep us posted. I’d like to know how the batteries last.

That doesn’t look bad. Let us know how it works out.

My workbench space is right on my layout and I have two 23W CFL daylight bulbs in a single fixture right overhead. I put on a double LED headlight when I need directional lighting.

What I like most about Your pic. not only the light, but the detail of the Hazmat decal on the placard holder on the tank car, a detail many people overlook, that really makes a model stick out, in my opinion.

Take Care!

That looks like a good buy. I like the idea that it is easily moveable so you can get the light where you need it. It is also right in front of you if you have a night time power failure when you are at the work bench.

Hopefully the battery life will be acceptable. I’ll state the obvious - turn it off when you don’t need it![:o)][swg]

Today I did a crude test. I put 3 AA NiMH rechargeables in and left it on for 1-3/4 hrs and could not see a difference from where it started. Tonight I ran it another hour and it might now be losing a bit of output but is not weak yet. (I put the near fresh alkalines back in and that might be a bit brighter than the 2-3 hour NiMH state.) I could do this better with a light meter but have satisfied myself that it will work pretty well for well over an hour with charged NiMH which I like.

As I earlier noted I have a bright LED (three AAA) headlamp, the 2nd one I’ve had. I bought it at Lowes and it has several LEDs surrounding one very bright (different type) LED. It works great but has reasonable but relatively short life on the generic AAA alkalines I buy for it. It does not work well with AAA rechargeables so I use the alkalines for it.

So, I think I will find the moveable Walgreens lamp useful with NiMHs. Since it will easily get turned on/off, the battery life on a given day should be fine. Not sure how it will perform when left with partially used NiMHs and tried again after a week or so. I don’t know how much NiMH charge “evaporates” with time when sitting unused. I know NiCads do that (ala my Sears drills).

The tank car shown is a Proto 2000 kit I found somewhere. Not sure what year those were released. It looks pretty much like some RTRs now sold by Walthers.
