The instructions for Sylvan Scale Models vehicles recommend using DioSol to remove the mold release from their resin castings. I don’t want that solvent in my room/lungs. What alternatives has anyone found? Will GooGone or Windex, or PineSol, or a citrus based cleaner or ??? work?
A mild dishwashing liquid like Ivory in warm water works just fine. I lightly scrub the parts with the soapy water using an old toothbrush then air dry.
You are very close to the actual product by mentioning a citrus based cleaner. Clare Gilbert, the owner of Sylvan Scale Models, mentioned in a clinic that his Resin Prep is just a citrus based cleaner called Citrasolve. (check spelling) He buys it in 5 gallon pails and repackages it as Resin Prep.
I talked with someone at the Sylvan Scale booth at the Amhurst MA show a couple of years ago on the same subject. He recommended a citrus based cleaner at that time as well. I found a citrus cleaning product at Home Depot in a spray bottle. For the small amount of cleaner needed to clean a vehicle casting, this is probably a lifetime supply. It looks and smells just like the small bottle of Resin Prep I got at the show.
