Tank cars from Beer can or?

Anyone made any tank cars out of Beer cans, potato chip cans or other?

Nope but saw a few that were on ebay. Not bad looking but I’ll stick with the reefers.

Years ago Walthers made a beer can tank car kit in O gauge - you had to provide the beer can. These unbuilt kits show up from time to time at the train shows.

**Laz…**like you, some folks prefer reefer to beer. [swg] Sorry, couldn’t resist your ally oooop.

Jack

Do you leave the can full to add weight?[:o)]

[(-D] Good one!

I thought I remembered reading about this before:

Too bad the link to ebay doesn’t show a picture anymore, as I recall it was interesting.

Jim…you have a mind like a steel trap for beer, uh, I mean tank cars. [(-D] That thread you posted the link for was from over two years ago! Dennis didn’t even respond to this thread, though he did on the one two years ago. Must be working too hard. Same with DougDG, Roy, and DougM. I’m beginning to worry about those guys.

Let’s just say a cold can of Old Style fits perfectly in an MPC-era gon.

Doug, you must have sensed a beer discussion somewhere in the CTT Forum. With your idea, you can change beers every day, thereby changing the look of the same car. Maybe we should start a thread: “How many beer-laden gondolas can your train pull?”

Jack

LOL, nope just OL MIL here. In cans, bottles and 1/2 kegs.

As always, Jack has a great suggestion - And with an unusual plethora of cans and bottles in the fridge to choose from this weekend, it’s up to me to test it out.

LOL. I was trying to pull cold ‘full’ cans or bottles - to be emptied only after experimenting was done

Well, here are the initial results from last night. I collected all my gons, open top hoppers, and flats (with side braces). Then opened a 6 pack of 16 oz. Old Style cans and 6 pack of Miller 12 oz. bottles. 0-4-0 Percy can pull 3 gons of Old Style but only 4 flats with bottles. 0-6-0 Thomas can pull the same. 2-6-0 James can pull 5 cans and (barely) 4 bottles. The latter sure are heavy - even though the former are bigger. Now if we try to fit multiple bottles on a flat without braces - with duct tape on the bottom of the bottles, Thomas can pull only one flat with three bottles (but not through the tunnel on Eagles Ridge.). Must experiment more.

DougM…were your (full) beer can and bottle hauling stats “either,” or “and” with the beer? That’s impressive either way with Thomas, Percy, etc. I can imagine the look I’d get from the wife if she saw me conducting that experiment. “Purely scientific, dear” [:-^] Next we’ll hear someone asking what refrigerant folks are using in their postwar refrigerated box cars.

Jack

Sounds like a heck of a B-Double E-Double R-U-N, Beerrun! [tup]

LOL - everything was ‘full’ - I put most of the cans and bottles back after the experiments. Kidding aside, I was curious about their pulling power - this was all on level track, and I tried to just get the cars moving from stop.
