Tankcars & Covered hoppers in the 1980's questions

Hi all.

So I need to know what types of tankcars were used during the 80’s to haul corn syrup. What models in N scale are available? The prototype of the Atlas 17,600 tankers didn’t start manufacturing until 1994, so what kind were used before this?

Also, what kind of coovered hoppers were used to haul plastic pellets in the 80’s? A factory here in town is receiving 4 bay covered hoppers, though I’m not sure what make or model they are.

Are there different uses for cylindrical hoppers verses PS and ACF hoppers? The graineries here in town always receives ACF 3 bay and PS-2 three bay covered hoppers and some newer models (may be Trinity?).

Thanks!

I think you meant 1984, in which case they are usable in the mid-late 1980s period:

Union Tank Car Funnel Flows were built starting in the 1960s, so you could use Walthers Funnel Flows for 1980s Corn Syrup tankers too.

As for the plastic-carrying covered hoppers of the 1980s, I remember seeing ACF 3 bays all over the place (the ones which look like Athearns old blue box) - the bigger Trinity 6200cf Hoppers I don’t think appeared in numbers until the mid-1990s (although I may be wrong)

I don’t think Walthers makes N scale models. I think Con-Cor does make a model of the 40’ funnel-flow though.

I don’t know for sure, however, I think those Atlas tankcars were around in the 1980s. I don’t think Atlas decorates them in ADM’s 1980s logo.

For the HO, Walther’s build dates for Cargill 16K tank cars are range from 9-81 to 9-87. The UTLX series is the new Gold Line have the older dates than the CRGX. The first release of the Atlas 17K build dates are 5-88 to 5-91. I’m awaiting the latest Atlas Cargill marked. (they’re in the mail.) Atlas has run same number series in both HO and N scales.
