On 12-12-06, I created a post describing my disdain of one of the most fundamental and misunderstood pieces of rolling stock…the tankcar. In my abhorring (which was brought on by complete ignorance on my part), I learned that these soda cans on wheels are actually quite safe. However, I am curious to know…what are some of the more “nasty” contents you have witnessed rolling down the rails? I’m no hazmater, but I was taught that if the contents end in “ide”, “ene”, or “cid”(as in a-“cid”), watch out! Or if you have to be Alexander Scourby to pronounce it, that should raise a red flag as well. I’m over my fear of tankers now but that doesn’t mean I desire a frothy mug-full of their contents. [xx(]
Tank cars in and of themselves are generally well built and maintained. But, they aren’t idiot proof! Which explains some of the more embarrassing incidents that have taken place over the last several years. Which reminds me, I have to study up on my hazmat qualification for this year. A half day sitting in an office, answering seemingly irrelevant questions until something happens that you think will never happen, and that could get you fired, or worse, killed.
Chlorine and sulfuric acid are probably the worst you will commonly see. Cl2 is nasty nasty stuff (ask the residents of South Carolina). Stuff that blows up is usually ok (except for right next to it) because it burns itself out rather quickly. Chlorine and sulfuric acid dont blow up, mix and spread quickly, and are difficult to dilute, contain, etc. and very toxic to anything living.
