Teaching an old dog new tricks New sound sys in an old Lionel F3

Would it be possible to install a sound system for diesel horn, bell and sounds into a dummy unit from an old Lionel F3? I saw a sound unit for sale on a Willimas site and am wondering if this could be powered from the pickup roller. Anyone ever tried this?

Thanks

You can add TMCC and Railsounds to an old Pullmor motor. They run a little ragged when starting off. I have done that to a conventional diesel and made it command. Not to familiar with Williams sound systems. They have that beeping horn and bell system. Not my favorite sounds. It should work if the control board comes with the sounds. Give them a call. I haven’t chatted with them in a long while but they use to be extra helpful. Good luck.

I recently did just that with my old 2333 F3 dummy unit. I used an old Williams horn sound board/speaker and tied it into the dummy engines headlamp power wire and attched the black ground wire to the chassis with an existing screw hole… Sounds and works well.

Sounds like a good idea, easily reversible and would be nice in the PW Lionel NW2 diesels, like the 624 C&O and 6250 Seaboard.

Williams TBII can be powered directly from the track pickups. Another option is the Sound Commander from ElectricRR. It will give bell and horn (or whistle) in conventional mode. I think it will also give prime mover ramp up as well. A little pricier than Williams but better sound. If you go the Sound Commander route consider getting the fatboy speaker option as well. Pete

I’ve done on a few F3’s with what’s said above, but not on a dummy. You’d have tons of room to install it. What I would do is punch out the circle plug in the tank for better sound. I don’t see a problem here at all. Good Luck
