Tehachapi double track part of California’s $510 million transportation spending
I have spent many pleasant hours at the loop, Sherman, and other noteworthy UP sites. As long as I was not trespassing on private property, UP’s or others, I have always found UP personnel to be polite, and in many cases helpful. Be a responsible fan; stay on public property, there’s lots of it.
This additional side track construction will give The Big Bad UP REASON to run rail fans off more. The UP is already runs rail fans off at the loop, (they are very Nasty about it) !!!
When I saw the headline, I thought they might be double tracking the entire Tehachapi Pass, and the San Joaquins could make the rail bridge to LA. I guess we will still have to wait for CAHSR’s own line to bridge the gap.
The Tehachapi project mentioned has been scaled way back from the original proposal I read a few years back where the were gonna daylight Tunnel Two and Ten. Are those two tunnels still in the new plan?
Tehachapi don’t seem that busy to me, spent 2 hours sometimes over threre and see nothing. Where as Cajon is always some trains passing by all the time. I visit those areas once a year for the past 30 years.
Charles if you stay off the right of way you won’t have a problem. They would only run you off if you appeared to be in harms way. We always see rail fans next to the right of way and without fail we will give a friendly wave. Not sure who’s being nasty but that’s not acceptable.
As far as UP being nasty, there is a track foreman named ‘Rusty’ and this prick does harass rail fans on PUBLIC property. As for the upgrades for Tehachapi, especially from public funding, that should include permitting passenger service through the Tehachapis with service for Tehachapi and Mojave by extending the San Joaquins into L.A.
And I thought the new species of palm tree was discovered up on the Continental Divide. I guess Trains has to save money to pay for all of Jim Wrinn’s alledgef bucket list trips.
Gee…now I’m seeing palm trees in Tehachapi. Oh no…it’s the same “file photo”!!!
I’m confused, are they double tracking the entire loop itself?
I believe the Tehachapi Loop itself is already double-tracked, until one reaches the tunnel. This project applies to additional sidings capacity along the Bakersfield-to-Tehachapi portion, most of which is single-tracked.
“While most other transportation modes rely on government funds, America’s freight railroads operate on infrastructure they own, maintain and upgrade to serve their customers and power our economy,” said AAR President and CEO Edward R. Hamberger.
(From a 2/6/2013 American Association of Railroads press release titled “Freight Railroads Plan to Invest $24.5 Billion in Private Dollars in 2013 On America’s Rail Network, So Taxpayers Don’t Have To”)
I have to second Mr. Correll’s comments. I’m NOT from Cali (thank God), but I can NOT understand how a state with such huge fiscal problems can justify paying for UP infrastructure when the RR is so profitable. How can that be justified?
