Terra Cotta color model paint?

I am looking for a good color to represent a terra cotta color tile roof. HO scale.

Many years ago (actually several decades ago) Pactra used to have a great paint called Terra Cotta. I used this on my very old model of the Santa Fe Capistrano Depot.

Now it seems this paint has been long out of production [:'(]

I looked online at various options but could not find anything suitable.

The best would be Scalecoat Terra Cotta, however this is in their restoration paint line and only available in Scalecoat 1. I have thin plastic to paint so this is a big no no with Scalecoat 1 which is formulated for wood and metal. Scalecoat 2 is for plastics.

I also tried looking at various craft paints, like Plaid Craft. Nothing seems right.

Most paints are too thick for HO scale so that is why I prefer model paint.

I have used Zinc Chromate Primer (Polly Scale) but it is too light in color…too pink. Works great though for Santa Fe Hi-Level dining car seats [;)]

What model paint do you used to represent a terra cotta roof?

Try Burnt Umber, some plan Jane red, and some yellow. Mix red and yellow to get orange first, then deepen the red, then add the Burnt Umber. You can also fiddle with adding just a tenth-drop of green to see what effect that has.

Crandell

You can try mixing your own, but I could swear I have seen a labled color called “terra Cotta” in the cheap acrylics craft paints section in some craft store…most likely AC Moore or Michaels. Check there, you may find one that you don;t need to mix to use and have come out looking right.

Testors Rust ??

Try Delta Coat acrylic (Hobby Lobby and /or Michaels should have it) Raw Sienna with a bit of Barn Red…I also believe Delta Coat makes the color Terra Cotta…chuck

Folk Art # 433 Terra Cotta.

Thin it with water and airbrush it.You can also thin it with water (just enough to make it brush smoothly and apply it with a good quality brush.

The is no problem with using SC1 on plastics. I do it all the time, both spraying and brushing. If you spray it in thin coats there will be no problem at all. If it has to brushed, just apply in thin coats and use a very good quality brush, not a foam one.

BINGO! I knew I saw it!

Catt hit it. The FolkArt #433 Terra Cotta is a good choice. I am currently building Walthers southwestern depot. The color looks great on the roof!

Thanks for the info on #433 paint. Hopefully my local crafts store carries it. If not, I can always order online.
