Texas and Pacific

I can’t believe the real estate arm of the T&P still exists as an operating entity:

And a large landowner a that. Who knew?

Rich

had no idea a railroad had owned that much land.

Wasn’t this true of Penn Central?

Texas required its railroads to be incorporated there, so there were fictitious RRs–the Texas & New Orleans was the Texas part of the SP’s Sunset Route, and I believe the Texas & Pacific and the International Great Northern were part of the Missouri Pacific.

Those were all independent railroads that were later bought out or leased. The paper railroad thing did not start until much later. In the case of T&P it had streamliner passenger cars with the T&P name on them and T&P built very large passenger station facilities with the T&P Logo. T&NO did not. T&NO was a railroad in the Civil War era of Texas and later morphed into a holding company of sorts for SP to acquire control of other lines. Not sure how long IGN was independent before it was taken over but IGN laid it’s own track as a independent rail company initially as well

My recollection was that the T&P predated the MoPac, and was later acquired by the MoPac.

Much of the T&P land is in the Permian basin, so mineral rights (oil) is making for a very good cash flow.
