The Coffee Shop (a place to chat) Est. 2004

Fergie good add on tips on teh ballasting, never thought of adding the india ink and pigments to the glue.See you learn something new everyday.[tup][8D] I have the same itchy ear as Bill. LOL. I will use the folded paper trick for putting down ground foam as well. Fergie those C-liners not only look nice they run even better and if your bioared they are heavy enough that if you have an A-B-A you can likley pull out tree stumps. Another glorious sunny day in the 70’s today perfect weather.Of a neat note as I was watching the CBC coverage of the VE day cerimonies they showed the new Canadian war Museum finally the historic equipment and displays will be well presented. As a final touch CWH’s Lancaster did three fly byes of capitol hill and the new war muesum.I’m not sure who got the bigger standing “o” The Lanc or the Vets.It was a wonderfull service. Well I’m done rambling for now.Talk to you later Rob

Ohh no, Bob fell asleep at the table…with the bottom of the pot coffee too!!! WOW, it’s so strong that I am wide awake!!

I just saw the weather satellite update, and it sure looks like Der John, Luc and Fergie are having a wild night up in NS. We are heavily overcast here too, windy, but the rain has stopped…what a wild Nor’eater this baby was.

FERGIE: Planting herbs is getting to be a lost art, I am gratified to see that some people still the value in home gardening. And this stuff is not cheap any more is it?

Well, time to hit the sack, see you guys tomorrow, and a great workweek for all you guys not retired yet, and for us guys retired, why are we still working so hard if we are supposed to be “retired”?

Bon Soir,

Good Evening All (late, but better late than never) [;)]

I picked up a virus on msn messenger a week ago Saturday and the computer has been down ever since then. After getting rid of the virus I had a ton of modem trouble but with Adrian’s help (once again) we have it up and running.

So I am back now. [:)]

It will take a while to catch back up. [:(]

I have not read any of the post but I hope everyone is well.

Take care.

Wow, 456 pages! You guys really have been laying it down now havn’t you? The trans-con would have been built in 3 weeks and a day if they had this crew on it!
Hope the party a few Fris ago went well, and a belated happy anniversary to Big Boy and all!
The camp trip went well, had alot of laughs, some great food, and made more memories, and isn’t that what it’s pretty much all about? The sum of a life isn’t the money that was made, the business deals that were sealed, but the laughs and loves that were shared.
It was cold at night, so the campfire felt extra welcome. I have a 12x12 Eureka! tent, and it took awhile for the single tent heater to take the chill out. Sure am glad they came out with ones safe to use in the tent, they are a comfort. Wi***hey burned for 8 hours instead of 6. It’s cold changing cylinders at 4 AM.
After the first night, we tarped off the west side and that cut the wind out, helped a bunch!
Got some good 4-wheelin in too, it still amazes me what a Jeep can do. Any Jeep. My G Cherokee (192,500 miles) is a little grocery getter, but when I take him off road, he is all Jeep. Has the soul of the old MB’s inside.Great vehicles.
Good to be back, sorta, ah, whos kidding who? I’d MUCH rather be on the mountain, good weather or bad. But, you have to touch down on the runway of reality sooner or later.
Hope all are well, I don’t imagine I’ll read back thru the pages, the last page I remember was, like, 433 or the such, and even at 8 hours a shift theres not enough time to catch up.
Welcome to all of the new folks, glad to have you aboard!
Well, take care guys, and I AM glad to be back here, just need to catch up with all of you.
Toodles!

Oh, she said yes![:D][:I][(-D][:D][:D]

Congratulations [:D] just remember the three ring theory… , the engagement ring, then comes the wedding ring and then the suffering [:P]

Oops more kits arrived today in the mail…ebay has turned into a daily delivery at the moment… so far so good, nothing said…

The Dining Room Table is now free of Engine Black due to the many many layers of lacquer I put on the table when I built it, I can just scouring pad the black away leaving no appreciable difference to the finish… apparently [:P]

Much achieved over the weekend on the DITM, most opportunities created have been capitalised [:D] and this week should see the final layout come into focus.

The structure building is now at a late night frenzy, I love detailing and weathering these babies…

Quick question for those who know… How much was petrol in 1969? I am in the process of finishing a little run down Service Station and I want to price the fuel… also what “brand” would have been common in W Va. in that period? Thanks in advance, I presume someone will have the answers, seeing how I was 2 years old at the time my recollection is a little vague

Good morning clubbers,

Judging from the recent exchanges, my following post will likely be considered off-topic but anyway here goes: had an excellent Mothers Day in my household, even managed to fini***he wiring of my second-largest block on the mill trackage while Vicky was taking a nap.

Also, the inevitable happened – I got a call from Teffy at ~6:30pmEDT. It’s a good thing supper was over, I was tied up until shortly after 8:00pm!

Phil&Runt –
Great news my friend[tup][8D]! Glad to see you back, didn’t realize you were off to a weeklong safari.

Grubby -

I’m in Maryland myself, so I can’t speak with absolute certainty about WV, but in 1969 I remember gasoline was ~30-35 cents per gallon. The most prevalent brand here was Exxon (formerly Esso), also a lot of Texaco and Shell stations as well. I’m sure there were plenty of those in WV too.

Noah –
You have been truly blessed to have a Dad like yours! Mine always rued the day he got me the original Lionel set that started me on this lifelong love affair with trains, thought he’d created a Frankenstein monster.

Trent –
You’ve really been on here a lot lately compared to before, must be ‘between exams’ eh?

Attaboy –
That bridge in your signature photo looks a lot like the B&O’s Thomas Viaduct in my area. Is it a former Pennsy structure? It seems very wide, like it supported a 4-track main line at one time or another.

JimCG –
Sorry to hear about that disk drive, when I hear stories like that I’m glad that there is an automated network backup service at my office – at least everything on my laptop gets saved p

Good Morning all,
Just another quick run through - off to L.I. this morning to pick up a motor and have some shocks dynoed.
Missed the storm entirely - sorry to hear that those of you north of here got hammered. My mom said she had a couple of leaks (minor) due to the wind with the storm She’s right on the water) and my sister took nearly 3 hours to makethe run from Lockport to Hubbards.
Grubby - I agree with Ken in the expensive northeast gas was 34.9 for hi-test and a couple of cents less for regular. Gas station brands were all different especially in the south . Try doing research, but I remember Sinclair (neat dinosaur logo) Flying A (neat Pegasus logo) ESSO, Shell, Union and a whole bunch of regionals that were merged or assimilated later. Wish I could still buy Diesel for .24/gallon - it now costs me 250.00 + to fill my truck and it only carries 120 gallons. Oh well, back then i was also making 4.60 an hour as a mechanic so I guess it averages out. regards, J.R.

Morning all. Just a cup to go. Back on first this week{banghead] Hope all you ladies had a great day! Will stop in after work.

morn ya’ll ; coffee to go black
grubby ; gas in ill. was 39.9 at the standard station i worked at along u s 40 , but you could get for 36 up town. i remmeber buying gas for 10.9 during a gas war between my cousins shell , a marathion, texaco, and a sunoco station… i went from pumping gas into cars to pumping into airplanes ha ha
gotta git kids here laters all mike

Was beginning to wonder, after reading all through your post and no mention of AmyJo! Started to think - “Did Phil chicken out on asking, did AmyJo say no, wha’happened?” [:O]

Good to know, and Congratulations!

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good Morning Coffee Shoppers, and Zoe, a mocha to go, please! I’ll cover whatever Teffy’s having, too.

Along the line of Grubby’s question, I recall when I was barely in my teens (would have been late 50’s or early 60’s) that in Missouri gas was about 30-35 cents a gallon. Stations in this area were Standard, Clark, Shell, Mobil (think those are all right). Grubby, you could have up to 5 cents below that, and claim it was a price war with another gas station in the area (not at all uncommon back then - boy, I wish 'twere so nowadays!).

Thanks for the info on C-Liners. What! [:O] Teffy has diesels? [;)]

ArkJim, sorry to hear about your virus problems. Good to see you back again, and hope you get through all/most of the posts in short order.

Looks like we have rain today here, and maybe some thunderstorms at times. Still gonna be warm - upper 70’s to the 80’s, the prognosticators are saying.

Not being one of the “retired”, got to get ready to go to work, so will see everyone later.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good Morning All:

I don’t know what’s wrong but I’m not getting any picture red “X” in the box or smilies today.

Yesterday was a great day - we picked mom up Sat afternoon and brought her to the house and then Sun my sister and her family came down and we sat out in the yard , Bar-B-Qed and enjoyed each others company, while my sisters grandkids enjoyed the backyard. They found some blackberries and had a ball pickin’ and eating.

Trolly/Rob:
I use a 1/2" foam brush as it works better at spreading ballast then a bristle brush. My complaints about ballasting is it’s manatness (boring).

John:
I’m glad that you found the whine but I’d have been forever figuting out that it was a driveline problem because of the high pitch.

Grubby:
Try 30 to 40 cents a gal, If a gas war was going on it might have been as low as 19 cents. Now I feel bad as yesterday it was $1.989

Phil:
Congrats on Amyjo. I’ve been married for over 40 years to the same woman and I love her more every day.

Well she has an ear problem today so I’d better go put the drops in.

Ya’ll have a blessed day and remember SANTA FE ALL THE WAY
Bob

Hi all

Currently trying to explain to parents why we have to pay a little more than the basic broadband subscriptions (15gb/month limit is nothing like enough when you have four people downloading updates, using messenger, and generally surfing). Think I may be getting somewhere though. New ISP may well be Pipex, and I’ve already assembled our new firewall box (using an old 486 given to me by my aunt, who was about to throw it away). Two network cards (paid about £2 for them from the “bargain bin” area at PC World…) and a free 50mb download (Smoothwall) and we’ll have a virtually indestructible Linux-based firewall. Further developments will have to wait until after exam season – I have exams on the 18th, 20th and 25th of May so currently revising.

Jim, I’ve read a fair bit about Dunkirk in recent years, frankly I’m amazed anyone made it off the beach – air support couldn’t be offered (RAF needed all the planes they had for the upcoming Battle of Britain) and the Stukas were able to attack almost unopposed – total carnage. Sounds like you’re having Hard drive problems too – went through that a week ago (no fun at all). Don’t think I’ll be buying any more Maxtor drives, as they either sound like a cement mixer (when brand new!) or break within 2 years. Seagate’s Barracuda range seem decent enough – have a 160gb one in my self-build PC that is almost silent.

***, the new PC is running ok – a bit sluggish sometimes (trying to cram XP into only 256MB RAM…) but spookily quiet – my own homebuild machine still sounds rather like Concorde at takeoff – need to get a fan speed controller as it’s unlikely to overheat even if I slow them down a bit.

John, we’ve thought about that – someone has to go up on the roof to wash it every so often, there’s no fitted ladder but a small quantity of scaffolding is enough to get up there – probably the most useful thing we’ve bought in the last 10 years, no more wobbly ladders while fixing and/or adjusting aerials, etc.

Ji

Morning everyone.Well back to work today[:(][8]Had a wonderfull off week but it looks like the weathers going to be even better this week. Kinda figures. For those with cats in the garden problems the last three years we have planted a plant called scardey-cat sorry don’t have the latin name for it.If you rub it’s leaves it gives off a skunk smell[:O][xx(][xx(] we have not had any problems with the little diggers since,I have found that putting down a good layer of the red cedar shavings helps as well don’t know why but hay if it ain’t broke.Looks like I may have actually won an ebay auction today if so a brass Peter Whitt will be heading this way for less than $100US[tup][8D]It will be a grinder for sure but that’s certainly fixable.northern Phil congrats big guy sooo when’s the big day? Also if it’s going to be in the coffee shop make sure that the girls get several months advance warning they get grumpy otherwise.Well I’m gone for now catch everyone later. Rob

Grubby, the price of gasolene in 1969 was .35/gal on average. I found this on the internet doing a search for gasolene prices, they had a nice xcel spread sheet with prices from the 40’s to 2004.

Ken, Teffy, inch53 , your memories serve you very well, my internet search proved you guys 100% correct…are you guys good or what!!!

MATT: Glad to hear that new PC is working well. 256mb of RAM is woefully small Matt for Xp. It will obviously work, but I highly recommend that you ( or mom) get extra RAM, it is quite low in price right now, get as much as you can afford, it really makes a difference. I have 1024mb. It takes time to swap in and out of memory and off the HD even slower, so if RAM is large enough, you can really fly.

DER JOHN, FERGIE, LUC: Can you believe that this doggone Nor’easter is still hanging around off our coastline? It is still cloudy and cool, but the sun is out just to the west of us in central Mass, so finally after 4 days we will see that yellow ball in the sky. At least the May flies have taken a back seat, they hate the cold rainy weather.

Time to get outside,

[:I]It was me[:I]

I called the LHS this morning to see if they could get their hands on another CN yellow/green RDC. Mike was very sorry for the screw up but said the units were llimited and all sold out. Dad, who overheard the conversation, said “Better tell him to put two more Dominionn Atlantic RDC’s aside” I in turn said Mike put them aside and can you put one of those CN Green/yellow C-Liners aside too?[:-^]

Phil: Congrats!!! Now the engagement ring is a done deal have you been fitted out for the other two rings?

***: Herbs are a big thing around here. If you don’t get to the nursery quick enough they’re sold out. We grow a planter full every year as well as hardier varieties in the garden. My favourite for the rockery is Wooly Thyme. Gardening has become the in thing this past five years as more and more people are into it and the number of nurseries has just bloomed recently

The Nor’Easter is all but done here. Here’s hoping for a good weekend as I have a big Scout Camp that I hope to attend.

Hi all,
I have finally designed my new layout. It is based off of the On21/2 in the may 2005 MRR.
i will be modeling it in HO and it will be smaller and i am going to add somethings. Hope to have the bench work started by june 11. That will give me plenty of time to get some cash and that is the day after school lets out here in Carroll County MD so i will have lots of time to build and model. Wish me luck! This will be my frist real benchwork operation, I think i can do it ok though.

Have fun railroading! [:)]
