The Coffee Shop (a place to chat) Est. 2004

Hello All,
FERGIE

i’m not sure what the real name is for this garden plant but it’s supposed to stink were cats are concerned, it may be some kind of pepper plant or somthing ???[%-)][%-)]

well today was the golden spike event, i have finnaly got the top section fitted with all it’s track so i can now sit back and enjoy things a bit more, i included a crossover on the twin track section which gives me more operating fun, i can hold two 15 car trains on opposite tracks and still run through[8D][:P][8D]

Hey Ken,
Nice to see you! Pull up a chair.
Trent

After reading both Richard’s and your response I went outside (in the rain no less) and went rooting for the plant marker from last year’s crop. The plant I refer to has the common name “Curry Plant” but goes by the latin name Helichrysum Italicum (Augustifolium) The label has been under the snow for four months but still reeks of that curry smell. Saying that the actual curry taste in this is too mild to be of any real use in the kitchen, though it does add a faint hint of curry and a nice texture to potato salad. By the way I’m told I make a wicked Chicken Tandoori!

Ed, Originally he was just a neat Dad, but dragging him everywhere, I’ve gotten him to the point where he can identify some of the locomotives we see often, and he enjoys going on trips with me trackside. He’s also becoming involved with the Module Group I’m joining too.

Jim, I got on the list when I was real young, if I remember right I signed up for it at a hobby shop that was in the Mall of America in Minneapolis (That has some connection to Elliot, don’t it?) and I’ve been on it ever since. I usually order from the hobby shop but once I did order direct from Walthers. After that they had my name spelled right(it never was before)!

Well, I missed yesterday again; don’t have any excuses this time though. My Dad and I went to a Milwaukee Brewer ball game yesterday, and we tried to do some railfanning of the area first. Didn’t work, saw about three trains in 8 hours. Really disappointing. I think I’ll stick with the scheduled trains with the Wisconsin Southern.

Well better get going, dad wants to use the phone and we have dial up, so I’m in his way. See you tomorrow.

Noah

FERGIE, TOP MAN, i can go to my local garden center armed with it’s proper name and get one or two, hopefully they will be able to understand it’s latin name, why they bother with latin names is a mystery to me,
thanks again

Afternoon all and what a day for a ride. Ken and Bill N I don’t know if you know about Loundon’s(sp)Dairy in Jackson but it is an ice cream place that piles it on what ever it is you order and is it good[^][8D][dinner][tup]

Fergi

Maybe I missed it but are these decoders sound and yes let us know how good they are.
Mike

Sometimes it seems like one thing or another stops it from happening doesn’t it

JimCG

Things were going pretty good until I started thinking about getting the bike back.

Noah

You are a very lucky young man. I didn’t have a dad that did things like that when I was a kid so remember all of your times that you have with him.

Steve-I saw your post on the forum about your swing out and nice job[tup][tup]

Well I see that Ed has come in and I am ready to leave so Chloe put his order on my tab.
Talk to you later

Good Afternoon Coffee Clubbers

Summer, or a reasonable facsimile of same, has definitely arrived here. It’s hot here today. [:0] Definitely a good day for hibernating inside with the a/c on. A good day for working on the trains. Did I mention it was hot here? [:(!]

Got out on the golf course again yesterday. Played 18, which is the first time in the past year that I’ve played a complete round. Played at high noon. Brought to mind that old Noel Coward song “Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the noonday sun…….”. We had played nine holes, then had the kids (junior plus nieces) at the pool at the club. After about an hour or so I decided to quickly play another 9, especially since there was no one on the course.

Glad I played yesterday, because today would be just a tad warm to be out in the sun, unless you were at the beach……………… [:D]

Duke, glad you enjoyed your day on the links, and that one special shot. [^]

I love a synchronicity when it occurs. A while back I was browsing my favorite catalog, no not Victoria’s Secret, [:0] Micro-Mark! I saw a small set of reamers. I’ve wanted reamers for some time (don’t ask me why) and actually considered emailing my (not so L)HS to see if he could get some before my visit, but blew it off. When I did make the trip, and while browsing through his shop, I came upon the very reamers I had been lusting after craving. Excuse me, got my catalogs confused there. [;)] So I picked up the set.

Today, while getting ready to glue the ground throws in place for the switches that I replaced (regular readers will note that I recently replaced three standard Atlas switches with three Atlas Custom Line switches that have the throw rod extended on both sides). Well, these are virtually identical to the standard switches, …….except that the hole in the throw rod is slightly smaller. [banghead] Pure dumb luck that I found that out before putting the glue on the bottom of the

I think it’s an elitist thing. Then again one thing I have noticed is the common names can be and often are, used to name several plants of different genus. This often confuses the Garden Store. Personally I’ve learned more latin names then the common names for the simple reason all the books/reference material uses the latin with little or no listing or reference to the common names. My plant books almost outnumber my train books!!

Fergie

Good evening gents and culinary MRR experts…[:D] I did some research based on Fergie’s plants in his 2004 garden. P Allen Smith is a gardener that is on the Weather Channel, and his web site had the following information about the “Curry Plant”. Fergie’s tag is correct for the official name, but it actually has nothing to do with the “seasoning” called Curry Powder. Curry Powder is a GREAT seasoning, as Fergie can atest to, it is made from the follwing herbs and spices: Coriander, Fenugreek, Tumeric, Cumin, Black Pepper, Bay Leaves, Celery Seed, Nutmeg, Cloves, Onion, Red Pepper, and Ginger. Now you know “why” it tastes so good in soups and on food dishes like poultry, and “why” it makes you go!![:I]
And, cats do NOT like the smell of the Curry Plant. The plant is so named because of it’s Curry Seasoning -like aroma.

While curry plant can be grown as a culinary herb - used fresh in soups and salads, I grow it for its great look in containers. It’s named for its curry like aroma that’s apparent by brushing against its foliage. Its more formal name is Helichrysum italicum. Names can be difficult and confusing. While you might think this is the herb of Indian cuisine fame it in fact only has a similar fragrance.###### The curry found on the spice rack is actually a complex blend of cardamom, turmeric, cumin, cayenne and coriander.

When you have a weakness for any plant with gray leaves its difficult not to include this little gem in your garden. Despite the hottest summer on record my curry plants came through like champs. They flourished in large containers filled with white petunias and variegated lemon thyme. These plants will continue to thrive into the coldest days of autumn but unfortunately they will not make it

Good Evening clubbers, nothing for me tonight.

Cape Jim,

He can try to build it if he wants, but I think it might be more than even he can handle. The actual bridge is 3791 feet long. In HO scale that would be about 44 feet. He may get a little frustrated trying to build that. [:D]
Also, I can’t take any credit for the ballasting info. I was reading that myself to be prepared when the time comes.

BTW, for those of you interested in bridges in general and the Rockville Bridge in particular, Dan Cupper’s book Rockville Bridge: Rails Across the Susquehanna is very good reading. The current Rockville Bridge is over 100 years old and the original wood deck bridge was one of the primary objectives of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. That’s why the battle was fought in Gettysburg.

Noah, way to go, getting your father involved in the hobby. We have to get these old people interested or the hobby will die…wait a minute, isn’t that backwards? [%-)]

Went to my mother’s place today for Mom’s day. My sister had her reservation to take her to lunch and my brother claimed her for dinner. So I spent the afternoon moving lilac bushes she wanted moved and digging out some wild shrubs that were growing too close to the house. Not exactly what I had planned but she seemed happy to have it done. Ah, the things we do for our mothers.

A little beat from working in her yard today. See you later.

Hi, BMRR, Fergie, and Ed. I’m on my way out but the seat should still be warm. [:)]

OK big mistake! This belongs in the Garden Railway Section!!

Masala is also a very good herb used in Indian cooking. Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe the British used curries to hide the smell of meat that was starting to turn.

***: I’ll be planting the Basil, Thyme, Oregano, Rosemary and assorted other delights in a week or two.

Fergie

Steve, that’s probably because a lot of plants have different names in different areas, and that can get somewhat confusing. Fergie’s writing that, reminded me of the summer just before my sophomore year of high school, I took a class at Shaw’s Gardens in the St. Louis area (fairly well known in Missouri - as Missouri Botanical Garden - http://www.mobot.org/ ), in which we got to identify and classify plants there (in most cases, varieties of orchids). I’d taken some Latin the year before in school, (which tells you something about how long ago it was…[;)] ) It wasn’t toooo hard… But I’ve forgotten the majority of what I learned.

Jim in Cape Girardeau

I wasn’t figuring Tom would model the whole bridge. Don’t think he has enough open track to put the whole thing in there anymore. But I liked the rustic stone look, and was thinking BridgeTom didn’t have much (any?) stone bridges in the pics I had seen lately. He may need a stone bridge - scaled down, of course… [;)]

Good evening, Chloe, looks like Der John and Adam (Cheese3) were here when I came in, but the browser decided to crash and now they’re gone. Chloe, I’d like a root beer float, please. Need something to even out my afternoon.

Well, the MIA drive has effectively died on me. Won’t format, can’t re-partition it, it won’t show up under one older OS and the newer OS disk utility just sits there with a message “Preparing drive - unmounting partitions” when I try to re-partition or format. [V] [|(] [banghead] Have emailed the dealer for info on Toshiba’s warranty (bare drives usually come with a 2 or 3 year drive, even though the dealers don’t guarantee drives that long). Kiss bye my scans (though I can re-scan about all of those), my 4-6 months of emails, and my copy of my 2004 tax return (ouch! - maybe I can get a copy from the IRS?). [censored] drive. [:(!]

Attaboy, I might want to make a bridge reminiscent of that one in your pic (just not as long). It got me thinking about ? (HO Model Railroad That Grows?) one piece I read where it showed how to plaster-cast your own ‘stone’ bridge, carving the stone courses into the plaster after it dried (and before you put it into the layout). That kind of bridge I could do, once I got the forms figured out and made. [:)]

Fergie, you need to also plant some Parsley and Sage in that garden (Simon & Garfunkel fans here?) [}:)][;)] For a minute when I came in earlier, I thought I was in the Cooking Forum or the Gardening Forum.[:O][;)] Yep, this place has a variety of topics covered!

Can’t stay much longer (don’t trust the browser not to crash on me again, for one). I have a friend who’s supposed to call in a little. From her email, sounded like her Mother’s Day may not have gone much better than my afternoon.

Hope everyone had a good day, treated their Moms or spouses well (if not out to dinner), and that the dishes are all cleaned up and put away. (You did put the dishes away, right guys? Good! [tup]

Good evening Coffee Shoppers: Hope you all celebrated Mothers’ Day in appropriate ways. My best beloved had breakfast in bed, and we had church with, and a birthday lunch for our middle grandchild in Truro. (His younger brother was in the hand bell ensemble in church.) “Dinner” was already ready, so Kris hasn’t had too much kitchen time today.[:D] [^]

JR: Thanks for the good thoughts, and yes it is really satisfying to have broken through to where most folks are just naturally[swg] Now to get a decoder into my RDC set. I’m figuring that it will go in the space in the roof, but I haven’t really looked at them for a while.

That was, and is, us! Heavy winds and rain all last night, eased off during the day while we were up in Truro. Has all come back with a vengeance tonight. We even lost our satellite signal for a while around news time.

Teffy was asking me the same thing on the phone yesterday. Same answer, no….hope he’s alright.

Bob: That annoying whine from the Dash8 wasn’t loose Kapton hitting the motor, but a lubrication problem in the power train or trucks. All quite on that front now, too.[^] (Hope that says to CapeJim that some mrring has happened as a result of this storm![:D])

Ken:

Yes indeed, and it was reported to encourage you to take the plunge![(-D]

Luc: Well said re Mothers Day and VE day.[tup]

Fergie:

Thanks, I’ll take that one home.[:D]

Hay Trent, youdid it again. If you would, let me get this round. Drinks are on the house. The ladder is in the corner behind the juke box.

I believe that someone asked what a C liner eas. It’s a diesel made by Fairbanks Morse. It has a covered wagon carbody and of course used the F.M. opposed piston engine.

Teffy is already corrupted. He has a number of Genisus F units.

Time for bed so I’ll say Good Night.
