It’s another cold morning here in Sioux Falls. Currently we have a temp of 13 degrees below 0, and the wind chill factor leaves us at -25 below 0. The temp here is not supposed to get above 5 degrees this afternoon.
Contrary to what CW says about molasses being made from a type of grass, it is actually a by-product of the refining of sugar from both sugar cane and sugar beets. My source of information is Wikipedia and last night I simply googled the term “molasses” and this is what I came up with.
On January 15, 1919 there was a huge disaster in Boston, Massachusetts involving a large molasses storage tank which collapesd. The details are too deep for me to go into detail, but if you google “molasses”, you should be able to find this story on the internet. In all, 21 people lost their lives when some 2,300,000 gallons of molasses were spilled from this storage tank. People and horses were literally buried in it.

This morning we had Santa Fe French Toast (old AT&SF famous recipe), bacon and coffee. All we needed was passing scenery looking out a dining car window, but we’ll settle for the NFL playoff football games instead. [C=:-)]
It’s a balmy 5 degrees here in Iowa right now, which is 5 degrees warmer than it got all day yesterday. Off to take care of honey-do’s- Joanie’s partial knee replacement is tomorrow, so I may be scarce for a day or two…
Molasses is also called “sweet sorghum molasses”. The definition of sorghum from Webster’s Dictionary: 1. any of a number of related cereal grasses with sweet, juicy stalks, grown for grain, fodder, sirrup, etc. 2. a sirrup made from the juice of some of these grasses.
The grasses grow like corn stalks, without the ears of corn. Instead they have little seeds, about 1/16" in diameter.
I changed the Sunday Dinner menu. Instead of Italian spaghetti, I’ve made the following: Beef noodle casserole, veggie medley of broccoli, carrots, corn, kidney, garbanzo, and Italian beans and red peppers. Also, there’s a fresh batch of medium chili on the warmer bar.

Piled up plenty of frequent driver miles in the past few days. Lurch protested a little as he passed 14000 and then 15000…and I discovered that I could put 28.4 gallons in a 25 gallon tank after the odometer’s electronics failed between Goodland and Limon last night…[|)][|)][|)]
Well, it wasn’t in the forecast, but the ol’ home weather station shows -14 overnight last night. It was pretty cold when I took the Dal for his walk, but I hadn’t checked before I left, so I was surprised to see 9 at 9 pm. If I’d realized it was that cold, he wouldn’t have gone…
Had a good trip down to Utica today. Did a little train watching and chatted with several fellow train crew members for a while. Bought a centerbeam flat and some loggers, too.
The trip back home was another story, however. While the trip down involved some light misting of snow and a bit of snow in the road for the last 10 or so miles, the trip north included heavy snow, limited visibility, and a fair amount of snow on the road. But then I drove out of it, and after a little shopping and supper “in town,” I arrived at the house under - clear skies. Such is lake effect…

Good Monday morning to one and all. We have a current temp of 15 degrees at 6:28 a.m., going for a high of 35. Then, tomorrow, a chance of 1 to 1 1/2 in. of snow, turning to rain. Ah well, such is life in the Ohio River Valley, I guess.
Coffee, oj, oj/tangerine, hot chocolate, hot cider and hot tea are ready and waitin’ for you all. And on the warmer bar, you’ll find: turkey bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy, and the thick buttermilk pancakes w/maple syrup, that Tom requested for breakfast.
Thanks to both of you for the pancakes. It’s always good to have friends you can rely on. We missed out on our snow Saturday. It stopped at the county line… It has dropped to 21 now in Carolina and may drop another one or two by daybreak. At least the campaign telephone calls are over. We were literally flooded by calls from McCain and Huckabee. Maybe we can nap in the afternoon again. Thanks again for the pancakes. Ta
Good morning. It’s still pretty cold here in the Dakotas, although not quite as cold as it had gotten here yesterday. Right now we have a temp of 7 above 0, and the wind chill factor here is 8 below 0. It is snowing here and I looked out my front door a half an hour ago and I had a half an inch of fresh snow on my front deck. We are expected to get anywhere between 2 and four inches of snow before the end of the day.
Today is Martin Luther King day and I have to work, oh well. I count myself lucky that I have a job to report to. The Wendy’s where I work was robbed early Saturday morning. We figure that who ever was on the night crew forgot to lock a door at closing time and the thieves simply walked in. They were able to break into the office and trashed it, but were not able to get into the company’s safe. They did make off with a plastic box of donations intended for the Dave Thomas Foundation for underprivileged kids, and it really bugs me that anyone would take money intended for a charity!
The breakfast menu that CW posted sounds pretty good to me, I’m hungry. I hope the rest of you out there all have a good day. Stay warm!
…The Monday morning report here a bit earlier: 11 degrees…A “warm up”. It is better than yesterday and again, the sun is shining. But they are saying late tonight we might start getting a bit of snow…1 to 3" by Tues early afternoon. Then it moves on. But I see where the Low will pass us to the north a bit and always the worst of any Low system should be to the north of the “Low”…So we’ll hope the snow is minumum.
So far for January, we can’t complain and it’s sure moving on rather fast. February, a bit shorter and then into March, the transition month…Anything can happen.
Trains…I believe with the economy slowdown…we’re witnessing a bit of rail traffic slowdown thru our area too. Shouldn’t be any great surprise. Now I’d like to see the same situation occuring with oil prices considering the lowering of demand throughout this country.
Quentin, it would be nice to see increased rail activity, and lower prices at the gas pump!! Although, when Sarah and I were out Saturday afternoon, I did notice that around the local gas stations we passed, the price for regular unleaded was $2.72 a gallon.
Still have some hot breakfast on the warmer bar for our patrons on the west coast; for those of us on the east coast, lunch is just about ready to be set out on the counter: Crock Pots with pork chop abracadbra, and a couple of more Crock Pots with roast, taters & carrots.
Ray, sorry to hear about the break-in at work. But glad to know no one was in there at the time, and no one hurt. For someone to steal a charity donation, is the lowest form of low you can get, in my book!!
But of course, that can’t be allowed to happen very long as the oil compainies must make that boat payment and today, it’s right back up to 3.06. Now they can rest easy again. 30 cents in one shot.
Pretty nice increase…Avg. gas tank capacity around 18. So that equals $5.40 per filled tank…Nice raise.
Good evening, all- here to report that Joanie’s knee surgery went as scheduled and planned, and she’s recovering quite nicely. Just a partial knee replacement, and the surgery was over with by 6 PM this afternoon, and she was standing up by the bed before I left tonight. She may even come home tomorrow! Gotta get to bed here, as I’ll need to run the snowblower before I head back down there in the morning.

Good Tuesday morning, everyone. Well, we’re at 32 degrees w/falling snow. It is accumulating, the ground is covered, and we have a snow advisory until 2 p.m. this afternoon. We had sleet before the snow started, so the streets are very slick this morning. Not too sure about me handling Produce this morning. I may turn it over to someone else today!
Coffee, hot chocolate, hot cider and hot tea are ready for you guys/gals. And there’s turkey bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, hash browns, homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy, and corn fritters on the warmer bar.
