Vic, try Northwest Shortline. Perhaps a little pricey, but they have lots of different kinds of drives.
Also, the Mac Switcher from Heartland Locomotive Works is cheap, easily bashed and has one bullet proof drive.

Thomas,
I could get Sheila to focus the camera for you…
As to ‘Whimsies’ -I have never been one to build one. I simply trust to human nature and copy what someone has built before!!!
Due to house moving, all locomotive and model making -is ‘on hold’. I have all the required parts for loco 11, 16mm plans and ‘shopping list’ for loco 12 and I am vainly searching for a suitable loco for number 13…
People have suggested the St James River engine -but that breaks two of the five selection criteria for me:
1 Did they build more than one of them?
2. Did the improvements make the loco worse?
3. It must be articulated to take tight curves.
4. I would prefer narrow gauge.
5. IS IT UGLY???
All of my locomotives were real -unfortunately…
regards
ralph
Ralph, the prototypes for your locos were whimsey[swg]
Attack of the werekittens
I’m hiding behind the couch!
There’s no room.
Find your own hiding place.
The monsters rule the World.
Quick,run,hide,
they interchange,they all cost money,
But,
I love them all [:D]
Quite right, Troy.
Now get to work![;)]

In a few weeks those werekittens will out run the London tram or ambush it on the curves. It will be a minature version of Molly and Tenbrooks. ( Ten Brooks out ran the Memphis train.) Famous American horse race.

Well, I might be out of the competition guys,
Second weekend and again i have been to sidetracked with family items over the last two weeks that I haven’t had a chance to do anything on my project, that plus I cannot find anything to drive it. If I can, I’ll finish it, but unpowered for now. Sorry guys.
Vic,
There’s two easy methods I can think of to power your whimsey contribution… CO2 cartridges (like those used for paint ball) or model rocket motors. You’ll probably do better with a CO2 cartridge, you just poke a hole in the end with a nail and let the car go.
You could use bottle rockets also, but where are you going to find them this time of year?
So has the security forces cut down on rumors, or is everyone working hard to build there projects?
Well, TJ has his ready for the testing stages. He was gonna bring it up to test it on my layout, but I’m under travelling orders from the secretary of home affairs for the next two weekends! He wanted the part that looked like a WWII - [censored]. Just looking for the gravitational brakes beings he don’t have a dynamic brake car to hook to it!
I am not authorized to comment on whether or not I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of any project which may or may not be in progress at this time or any other, in this or any other location by this entity or any person or corporation either acting alone or on the behalf of any said person or entities.

So the Sunk Works are hard at working [banghead][censored][censored][censored][censored] that is good to see.
Looks like government funding is being withdrawn[V][V]
Hi all
Well there are no mights about it I am out[:(]
I will not be any thing near finnished.[:(]
Could some one PLEASE HELP HElp Help!! by explaining how to build the front end of a wooden boat before I go off the rails completely [banghead][banghead][banghead][%-)]
regards John
You build it nicely.
Does that help[:-,]
John.
This could require a little bit more information about what you are trying to achieve.
Hi Troy
Spooners rail boat
In a nut shell it was a small sail and gravity powered rail vehicle.
The front end of which looks something like a viking long boat but has no dragon head it curves around the front and has an upward curve like the medieval pictures of boats and has a big ball shaped protruberance where the figure head would be…
OK so the real one was 2’ gauge or there abouts.
But for whimsey no one said it couldn’t be based on something real[:D]
incidently the real one came to a sticky end head on with a slate train
Now where did I put those Temille split spoke wheels? and Tootle Eng inside axel boxes.
regards John
Just came in from a test run of my whimsy mobile.
It went so fast it completely miss the cure, went through the fence, down the 40 ft hill, over the small trees the city planted down there, and smack into the oncoming lane of traffic! Big truck … Well… it ain’t as tall as it was!!!
Got to start over
Got to find a smaller rocket motor!
Need to find something heavier that just a wheel set!
Must remember to get camera for next test you dummy just in case the same [censored] happens again
I think the idea of whimsey is different in different cultures.
I think mine is going to be a bit of a let down…
If we were looking for spectacular ,I do electrical work for the fire service.
Together we could have come up with something good.
John.
Balsa frames with thin balsa planks secured with woodglue and small pins eg. track pins to simulate nails ).
Soak all the wood in warm water before you start.
For best results, wear a hard hat with 2 horns sticking out from each side…
Also grab wife, throw over shoulder and carry off to…
Sorry.Wife stopped play[:I]
