Hello all! I am modeling my first layout in my room. I am modeling HO scale with a minimum radius of 15". i know, i know that is a very tight radius but hey any bigger of a radius than 18" and i’ll be sleeping in the hallway…hehe. i have some pictures to show. they are not starting from the beginning of work on my layout but i didnt remember to take pictures.
looking from above
the empty area is where the town will be.
another overveiw
looking at the section of cardboard mesh i have finished already.
looking at the freight station and the sidings. you can probably see where the river will be.
yes that is all masking tape holding everything together. the reason: this is my first layout so i am testing different methods to see what works the best. if i go straight to using glue then if i mess up i will have a problem.[xx(]
please fell free to post comments. if you have any tips for me i would definatly use them. i am collecting all information for my first layout[:)]
Looking good so far. You have done pretty good for the amount of space you have to work with. You could eventually put a second level that will give you more room. I like it so far. Keep us posted with pics. Dave
Funny what a name will do. I pictured 20 x 40 basement layout. Well if you can’d do it in space, you can make up for it in name.
I imagine you tested this before you built, but can’t imagine the big BN units on 15" curves. You’d do much better with turn of the century and older steam.
That said, you’ve make good use of the space. Keep us posted.
Well, i wish i had a 20 x 40 space for a layout and i am going to be running just some small ore cars and small locomotives on the 15" part of my layout. I’m going small before i go big…except for that i cant really go any bigger. This layout is being built on a plywood base. the plywood is resting on a bed frame that my grandfather made me a few years back. 13 1/2 below my layout there is another sheet of plywood in the bed frame where the mattress used to be. i am thinking of building another layout down there. but i dont think they could be connected as they are 13 1/2 inches apart from each other. thanks for the comments!
aaah! thank you rayw46! i will correct my signature. i am looking at some gp-20 or 30’s. i know those will fit around 18" radius but im not quite sure about 15" radii.i have a cheapo bachman gp-38 that barely works but it can make it around 15" curves.
I think it is great that you are building this layout and taking the time to make it look great. A lot of people complain about not having space. You are making the most of it.
thank you spacemouse. it can get kinda hard to model in such a small space but i think i can survive. hopefully in the future i will find more space to model. that said i think im going to go lay down some plaster cloth.
Yester day i tried my hand at weathering. The one that turned out the worst i think was the tanker. the best: santa fe 50’ boxcar
Update: Well i have use up my roll of plaster cloth i bought yesterday. it was the first time i used and ive been very impressed with the results. here are som pictures to show:
overveiw of everything ive covered so far with the plaster cloth.
this is the edge of the plywood base. looking upstream.
