The Hinkel HUMP

I thought some on this list would enjoy a look at the “HUMP” at Hinkel as seen July 23, 1984. In the first photo, UP 3001 and 3000, both SD40s and the 3000 being the class unit, work the hump at Hinkel, Oregon.

In this next photo UP 3001 and 3000 pull a cut of cars up and onto the “Hump” at Hinkel - July 23, 1984.

Thanks guys. Every shortline or class one railroad we visited gave us an open door. Those photos were taken on my first ALL/REAL railfan vacation. It was such a great trip, I’m happy to have a place to share the memories.

I was in Hinckle last May. Did you go on the north side & see the loco maintanence shop? Did you see the A/trak station there?

Yes spbed, we got to go over to the locomotive shop. But, I don’t remember the Amtrak station, but this was 21 years ago, if we saw it, I didn’t take a photo. I was given a release to sign, then instructed not to climb on the equipment and stay out of the shops. Here is a locomotive consist we spied on the west side of the shop. I think if that NW unit with that “other” UP unit was running back east, it may have raised some excitment!

The UP rotary plow 900076 was also spotted just north of the locomotive shop.

Thanks for shareing Jim. I havn’t been to Hinkle in a few years. It seems every time I go there the wind is blowing in the stink from the Simplot plant and I can only handle so much of that.

Hey, good morning Chad. I don’t remember the stink there, but I sure remember the stink from the Boise Cascade paper mill at Wallula, as the Texan say, just up the road a piece!
