My CSX layout will be set in southwest Ohio,Northern KY.It will include Chessie,Seaboard,NS,Conrail and CSX power.I am also building the CSX roadrailer.I had some custom decals for these made.My major emphasis will be grain,auto and mineral traffic.My father was a CSX employee.He retired in 1998 with 41 yrs service.I got to live firsthand in the Chessie era and remember the Chessie Seaboard merger.I was able to ride many yard jobs in the Chessie era,thanks to my father.I guess you could say CSX is in my blood.Dan

I think CSX still handle’s the salad bowl express. I see it come through my backyard every week. It’s hard for me to model though, because I don’t have the amount of track or trackage rights over my friend.
( My friend and I share a layout. We each handle one half, and the salad bowl express was verey common, but now he has more track than I do, so he basically has more trackage rights than me, and he dosn’t want to deal with the interchange between yards. Why did I agree to this in the first place?

I think that sharing a layout is a cool idea. But do you share a control system as well? If he has more trackage rights than you, consider, if you have the space and money, adding more track or negotiating more trackage rights.
The control system’s are seprate thats the problem. When some locomotives were DCC and some were analog we had a shared control system because there were less loco’s to keep track of. When we brought all the loco’s into DCC we split control system’s because we had a good 75 loco’s between us to keep track of. Not only do we run the freight aspect of CSX/ BNSF/ UP , we also run the passenger aspect of the operation by allowing some Amtrak trains down the line. Not only is this hard, but my friend want’s to add Cajon pass to the layout. That would be one doozie of an addition![yeah] The dcc makes it diffacult for us to interchange, so we try to keep that to a minimal. As for money, Since I’m 13, money isn’t very easy to find. The suff I have already, I had to work to get the money from my parents,( when I say work, I don’t mean mow the lawn, I mean Change the car’s oil, blast the wall’s clean that sort of thing) so that’s waaaaaaaaaaay out of the question. Look’s like were going to be stuck like this for a while[sigh]
My dad is supportive, and so sometimes pitches in some money to help me buy stuff.

Big CSX fan here. Heck, I might even like CSX more than UP now. I live about 20 minutes CSX’s yard, locomotive shop and car repair shop in Wyoming, MI, and just a few minutes from the Plymouth Sub. Here’s a few shots of the action down in Wyoming Yard:

In looking at them, I have to admit that I find myself still trying to get used to the newer dark blue “C&O-throwback-Wanna-be” paint scheme.
I really enjoyed the previous Gray, Blue, Yellow scheme introduced in 1987 or 89 and juse wished that CSX would have just repainted the faded locos back into the snappy scheme. I remember that Model Railroader even featured that paint scheme it in a well done article featuring a CSX GE Dash 7.
It’s understandable though as the newer paint scheme is cheaper to apply. Painting just one locomotive costs several thousand dollars, so the bean counters are going to be looking at cost savings. I can see why the UP has stayed with their scheme (with minor modifications) for 60 or 70 years!
Nice to see that Conrail units are still crusing around.

CSXGuy, you said you’re down near P’tree city, ever been over to the Intermodal Yard at Fairburn? I’m located east of Atlanta, on the old Central of Georgia line that runs to Augusta. I try to go trainwatching about twice a week. There’s a single track main out this way, and I drive from Stone Mountain to Madison chasing them and sometimes taking pictures. My favorite hotspots out here are definitely the industrial areas where there’s alot of switching going on. There’s a small yard in Lithonia (only about 6 tracks) but there’s usually alot of meets that take place there so you can sometimes catch two or three trains as they come through Lithonia. There’s also a local shortline railroad that interchanges with CSX in Covington and Social Circle, called the Great Walton RR. Just wanted to drop in on the topic and say hey!

The Gray Blue and Yellow scheme (YN2) is pretty cool, but what I really like is the newer “Dark Future” (YN3) scheme. Nothing looks cooler than a CSX SD70MAC in YN3! Other great CSX schemes were the Stealth Gray and the MOW Orange.
Yes, I too love the Conrail units. There’s a lot left on CSX, and quite a few on NS as well. That Conrail SD50 in the first pic was a rare find! I was glad to have been able to see it.

That is the Express Lane train, QNPSKP (UP)/Q390 (CSXT), see the November 2001 issue of Trains, CSX’s website and/or UP’s website. The Salad Bowl Express has not existed in a long time
