The railroads are going to the dogs!

Does anyone know of any shortline or regional railroads that have an animal or something related to an animal in their names. One that always strikes me as funny is the California Skunk Line Railroad. There must be more than that though. Hoping to hear some funny railroad names.

Willy

Skunk train in reality is California Western RR (CWR)…

Aberdeen & Rockfish RR
Bighorn Divide & Wyoming RR
Buffalo & Pittsburg RR
Elk River RR
Lowville & Beaver River RR
Nittany & Bald Eagle RR
Otter Tail Valley RY
Pigeon River RR
South Buffalo RY
Turtle Creek & Lebanon RY…at that’s stretching things…

Great Western/Omnitrax used to have a big jackrabbit logo a la chessie on the long hoods of its engines…

…better off looking for mascots such as the Crab Orchard & Egyptian RR’s Pig Hoggers…[swg][swg][swg]

ugh!

From a 1957 Official Guide:
Beaver, Meade & Englewood
Belfast & Moosehead Lake (sort of on the edge)
Buffalo Creek & Gauley
Buffalo Creek
Butte, Anaconda & Pacific

Interestingly, only three of the RR’s MC listed are in the '57 guide: A&R, L&BR, and SB

How 'bout the Heart of Georgia RR “the HOG”…?

LC

Larry:

BM&E died as an MKT branchline in the early 1970’s … the yard at the east end at Woodward, OK became NOKL (now part of RailAmerica)…the extreme west mile or so is now an elevator spur (Equity Elevator) at Keyes, Oklahoma (panhandle)

Here in Louisville, the Paducah & Louisville has two engines that are:

l. University of Kentucky (blue & white) # 1988 or 1998?) Name: Wildcat

  1. University of Louisville (red & black?), don’t know that # on it. Name: Cardinal

The #s are for the years they won the NCAA championships.

For BC&G, what is the animal?

P>S> We live in Louisville, but are total UK fans.

Norfolk Southern with the horsehead logo, Chessie with the cat.

Until recently, the Alco haven …

Kankakee, BEAVERville and Southern. [:p]

What’s next…Alpaca and Western?

That Counts Locomutt I agree I like Kentucky Also Louisville DROOLS

DOGGY

That would be the Buffalo Creek & Gauley…[;)]

Rutland had a passenger train called the “Whippet.” “Route of the Whippet” appeared on many of their box cars. A whippet is a breed of dog.

I have never heard of a whippet in my life. Do you know what they look like? Color, Size, etc.

Willy

According to Websters a whippet is:

“any breed of a small, slender dog used for racing”.

Does anyone use beagles for racing?

A whippet looks like a downsized greyhound. (dog not bus)

Don’t know of any beagle racing, but I had a greyhound named Beagleindisguise (Beagle In Disguise) that raced.

Ken S

Canadian Pacific uses a BEAVER logo.
Chessie System.[:)]

Thanks! I kind of figured that you meant it looked like a downsized dog and not a bus!
