The "Scratch N Sniff" issue...

Well, I tried it, and my “spot” smelled more like a cheap leather jacket. Probably just as well, as if it DID smell like creosote, the magazine would have been pulled from store shelves in California. I sniffed the Frailey column and it was nice and clean, but somewhat generic. The circus train pictures reeked of elephant poop. Do an article on the Coors cars and try the sniff thing again. If it works, I’ll buy a “six-pack” of issues…

The smell I’m gonna miss? Opening up a box of fresh K-64 and uncorking that plastic lid.

Before anyone starts suggesting that I was slamming the issue, I should make it clear that my first post was tongue-in-cheek (nose-in-face?)… The selection of articles looks like great reading for many cold evenings to come, and the pictures were stunning. A great start for the New Year!

Of course Fred, you knew better…

Dry humor doesn’t always work too well here. This is a tough crowd. I know - I have been trying it for years.

But I got it and thought your posting was very funny!

Unfortunately my issue is in my Driver’s hands, so I must wait until he finishes it. I will try your pointers.

Mookie

Hmmmmm… Mine smells like an empty mailbox.

Exactly!## Spot ON, Norris!## I needed my TRAINS!

I was in such shaky condition tonight

I grabbed the (November) R&R from the news stand at Dillon’s.

Tip of the hat to Adam P.

I still like that Fall color shot! [bow] Congrats! [Y][Y]

Hmmm, Mine Smelled Like The Mailbox!!!

I seem to be in the same boat Mookie. Seems my issue must swim across Lake Michigan, then the the postman takes a few days to read it. I get it later than most.

As you probably know, the last roll of Kodachrome to be processed was processed today. This was supposed to include the very last photograph taken with Kodachrome.

Never used the stuff, but have met a lot of people who swear by it.

why smell a magazine when I can just go out and smell the real thing?

You are all so lucky. Here it is New Year’s eve and my magazine has not arrived. If it takes much longer the scratch and sniff patch will be faded into history. I guess this is one of the disadvantages of living in a rural area near an abandoned rail line between Dallas and EustaceTexas.

I just noticed the time stamp of my previous reply as being 1:19PM whereas all of my clocks say 7:19AM. I guess the forum runs on Greenwich Mean Time.

Same here. Guess I’ll have to wait until next year to read mine.

Look over to the right of this page you are reading right now. You may have to scroll up or down a bit, to the area where you see your user name and 8 links in red text. The top link is “Public Profile (Edit)”.

Click on the word “(Edit)” and you will get a page with a bunch of options and settings. Scroll down to the section labeled, “Common Profile Options” and then look at the 2nd to the bottom entry, titled: “Time Zone”. Select your time zone in the dropdown selection box to the right of that line. Then scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and click the “Update Profile” button.

Now the times will all be in your local time reference.

While you are in the Profile edit page you might want to look at the other settings to see if there is something else you want to change to enhance your use of the forum.

Thank you SV. I am now on central standard time. I have been to London many times on business and very familiar with GMT. Lots of good railroading there. On the Gatwick Express between Gatwick airport and Victoria Station you will pass more passenger trains than we have in this country. Unfortunately freight trains are rare. About all you see are MOW trains. Guess they run the freights at night when passenger traffic is low.

Did you set a time zone when you began participating in the forums? You can change the time zone (and other things) you see on all posts if you click on (Edit) by “Public Profile” on the right side of the screen. All of the posts I see come through in Mountain Time.

As to smelling creosote, if I wanted to, I would go a place where ties or poles are treated.

Creosote?? Mine smelled more like an old ball glove.

My copy has not arrived yet, but I’m not concerned. The idea of a Scratch n’ Sniff spot doesn’t seem very progressive. I don’t see what is to be gained by it and I will probably put a piece of tape over mine. Maybe my issue will clarify that.

The last I remember, they were being used to sell perfume.

Well, my “Scratch & Sniff” Issue arrived today, I think I like the “Empty Mailbox Smell” better than the “Smells like Newsprint & Ink”. It most assuredly did not smell like creosote.

There really is a scratch and sniff spot?

Yes - right in the middle of page 35. I thought it smelled more like faint English Leather or flavored pipe tobacco than creosote, which is really pungent. [:-,] I wonder what the former Editors of Trains would think of this stunt ?

Someplace in the last week or so I read an article that listed several other recent or current issues of magazines which had “scratch ‘n’ sniff” in them for more typical substances (this one was not mentioned). That caused me to wonder if there was a big promotional or demonstration push by the print media publishing industry to include “scratch ‘n’ sniff” in the January 2011 issues ?
